Minnie Elizabeth Scarborough, 92, died Thursday, June 21, 2012 at a Jacksonville, Florida hospital. A native of Baxley, she has resided in Jacksonville since 1949. Mrs. Scarborough was a member of Highlands Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Frank Scarborough and her daughter, Lanita King. [Full Story »]

The Appling County Board of Commissioners accepted the low bid from Everett Dykes Grassing for the amount of $1,446,881.00 for road resurfacing of 28 miles over all five Appling County Districts. The motion was approved on a split vote with Commissioners Ronnie Rentz and Theodore Wilkerson voting in favor, and Commissioners Sarah Boatright and Charlie Leggett voting against. Chairman Lewis Parker broke the tie by voting in favor of the motion.
After the vote commissioners Rentz, Wilkerson and Chairman Parker stated they would have preferred voting for a local bidder, J. Heirs Company with a bid of $1,515,331.00, but the amount of difference was too great to overlook and would not fall into the county’s normal three percent grace range for local bidders. Sheriff Benny Deloach reports the following incidents handled by deputies with the Appling County Sheriff’s Department.

On June 12, answered a call on Ten Mile Road in reference to an abandoned vehicle. A vehicle was left in the ditch. A wrecker was called to remove the vehicle. [Full Story »]

More than 350 paddlers traversed some 105 miles of the Altamaha River June 16-22 as part of Paddle Georgia 2012, a week-long canoe/kayak journey organized by Georgia River Network (GRN). Approximately 30 paddlers also participated in the weekend only version – Paddle Georgia Lite. [Full Story »]

National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) member Martha Dykes represented the Colonel Daniel Appling Chapter at the Georgia State Society DAR 114th State Conference in Augusta. The first day included a memorial service for departed members, the Chapter Regents’ Club luncheon, the opening business session and the chapter appreciation and page reunion banquet. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Jessie L. Caulson, son of Lynne McNeal of Baxley, is currently deployed. Caulson along with fellow Sailors and Marines aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) commemorated the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Midway with a ceremony, a fitting tribute given the ship’s close ties to the battle. The previous USS Enterprise (CV 6) and her wing played a vital role in the pivotal World War II battle that took place June 4-7, 1942. [Full Story »]
