I squeezed into the front row of the Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., two weeks ago  for the oral arguments of the Yucca Mountain case. What I heard coming from the government lawyers, however, confirmed that federal agencies have become way too powerful for their own good. Back when the rains and storms came on a regular basis, we had constant trouble with our phones. Then the rains stopped for what seemed like ages. So did the phone problems. Now it’s raining again, thank God, and I pray that the rain continues, but the phone problems returned with the rain. As a matter of fact, we had a major breakdown about two weeks ago, and I discovered what a computer addict I’ve become. I said I’d never be a Facebook addict, but I realized to what degree I’ve succumbed when I didn’t have internet for about a week. [Full Story »]

B. J. and I began our Mother’s Day celebration on Thursday. Looking for a new place to do dinner, we selected a Chinese restaurant not far from us. Board decides to revisit Fourth District Elementary renovations

During the adoption of the agenda at a work session meeting of the Appling County Board of Education, held on May 14, District 4 Board Member Randy Crawford made a request to add an item to the agenda under action items. Crawford requested to title the item as Fourth District renovations with possible changes related to the school. Superintendent Scarlett Copeland also recommended that resignations and waivers be moved to action items. She also asked to move the closed-door session before action items. Weaver completes Navy basic training

Navy Seaman Recruit Kevin D. Weaver, son of Tammy M. and Randy D. Weaver of Baxley, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Weaver completed a variety of training, which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. The Appling County Pirates (33-2) advanced to the State Championship with two wins over fellow Region 2AA foe Brantley County (20-13) on May 21. The Pirates won the first game 11-1 in five innings and the Pirates would win the second game 12-6 to advance to their first ever state championship. The Pirates will host Region 2AA second seed Pierce County Bears (29-7) in the State Championship series. [Full Story »]

The 28th Annual Ceremonies of the National Peace Officer’s Memorial Day were observed in Baxley at the Law Enforcement Center Thursday, May 17. The ceremonies began at 11:00 a.m. with Mayor Steve Rigdon giving a warm welcome to all. Next to speak was County Chairman Lewis Parker who also gave a big welcome to everyone in attendance.
