At a called Appling County Board of Education meeting held on Tuesday, April 24, CFO Adrienne Taylor and Superintendent Scarlett Copeland gave an update to board members on the current and upcoming budgets. According to the duo, despite continued cuts from the state, the school system’s finances are in good standing and should be able to fund the upcoming year’s budget without having to furlough staff or raise taxes. Appling County will hold the National Day of Prayer Ceremony on Thursday, May 3, at the Appling County Annex Building on Park Avenue beginning at 6:00 p.m. [Full Story »] 

All Christians in Appling County are encouraged to unite together as one Body on Saturday morning, May 5, at 9:00 a.m. to begin a Celebration Walk beginning at the Northside Park (old Jr. High) and ending at the Baxley Church of God with a Prayer and Worship Service which should end around 11:15 a.m. The Walk will begin with prayer by the Rev. Johnny Blair of First African Baptist Church and stops will be made along the way to pray at the Courthouse, Hospital and Board of Education and finishing at the Church of God. [Full Story »]

The following are highlights of incidents that were handled by officers of the Baxley Police Department over the past few days.

On April 5 at approximately 9:47 p.m., answered a call to Jumpin Jacks Convenience Store in reference to a suspicious person. On arrival officers met with the clerk who told them that a subject had been hanging around acting suspicious. Upon officers questioning the subject, they discovered that the man was wanted by the Baxley Police Department for a failure to appear. As officers were patting him down, prior to transport, they seized a drug pipe off of his person. Arrested in connection with this seizure was Daniel A. McKenzie, 32, of Baxley, on charges of one count each failure to appear and possession of a drug related object. [Full Story »] 

The Appling County #786 Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, held their regular meeting at the lovely home of Glenda Quinn with five members and two prospective members in attendance.

They were Deloris Bowers, Martha Dykes, Joan Cauley, Glenda Quinn, Joyce Tillman, Barbara Baker and Sandra Wi ngate. [Full Story »] 

Changes in the TADRA Law for teen drivers put parents squarely in the passenger’s seat. It requires that anyone who applies for a permanent driver’s license must have a parent, legal guardian or responsible adult sign a verification form affirming that the candidate has completed 40 hours (with 6 hours at night) of supervised driving experience, if the candidate has successfully completed an approved driver education course.
