At a work session meeting held on May 14 Appling County Board of Education District 4 representative Randy Crawford requested that the board consider allowing a special committee to review the renovation plans for Fourth District Elementary School. Following that meeting a committee made up of stakeholders from the school and the school system including current Lead Teacher/Administrator of Fourth District Greg Williams, PTO President Lori Fowler, Crawford, Superintendent Scarlett Copeland and Chief Operating Officer Winton Herrin met with Lentile Construction (construction management firm) and the system’s architect concerning possible changes to the renovation plans that were previously approved in November 2011. The Georgia Blueberry Festival will be held at Goldwasser Park in Alma on June 1-2. The festivities will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight on Friday and from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Saturday. [Full Story »]

At a council meeting held on May 22, Baxley Mayor Pro Tem Esco Hall, Jr. made a motion to approve a request for a new beer and wine license for Golden Touch One Stop. Council member Betty Livingston seconded the motion. Council members, Kenneth Waithe, Tim Varnadore and Mickey Bass voted against the measure. The request for an application for a license to sell beer and wine did not pass and was denied by a three to two vote for Golden Touch One Stop, owned by Japheth Errol Houghton, located at 828 N. Sheriff Benny DeLoach would like to report the following activity of the Appling County Sheriff’s Office.

May 14, officers spoke with personnel from Memorial Medical Center in Savannah who reported a child abuse case that supposedly occurred in Appling County. A child sustained an injury to its femur. The case is being investigated by DFACS and by the Appling County Sheriff’s Office. [Full Story »] 

The following are highlights of incidents that were handled by officers of the Baxley Police Department over the past few days.

On May 2 at approximately 2:46 a.m., stopped a vehicle for a headlight violation. As a result of the stop officers observed the driver to be impaired. The driver was transported to the detention center, for a D.U.I. test. At the detention center and during a pat down by a female jailer, a small purple bag of cocaine was seized. The driver a Heaven Manning, 19, of Hazlehurst, was charged with one count each of possession of a controlled substance, D.U.I., open container, and possession of alcohol by a minor. A passenger in the vehicle Zachary Kyle Hall, 21, also of Hazlehurst, was charged with one count of open container. [Full Story »] 

Vandals have struck again at the Ernest J. Parker Recreation Park. The memorial sign, which has already been repaired once before due to vandalism, was hit again last week. [Full Story »] 

For saving enough energy in 12 months to effectively plant more than 23,880 trees, Appling County School System will be presented with the award for Energy Stewardship from Energy Education during the May 21 board meeting. The award for Energy Stewardship recognizes the organization’s effort to implement an innovative organizational behavior-based conservation and management program. The program is administered through a strategic alliance with Energy Education, a national company whose energy conservation programs have saved more than $2.6 billion for educational and ministerial organizations since 1986. Navy Seaman Recruit Kevin D. Weaver, son of Tammy M. and Randy D. Weaver of Baxley, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. [Full Story »]
