Jasper Tomberlin, 52, of Surrency, died Saturday, February 4, 2012. Tomberlin was born Sept. 22, 1959 to the late J. C. and Loualta Tillman Tomberlin. He was a member of Surrency United Methodist Church. Jasper served as the Appling County Commissioner for District 3. He was the 2009 Homecoming Parade Grand Marshall and the 2008 FBLA Business Person of the Year. [Full Story »]

The Appling Christian Academy Lady Eagles overcame a 17-point deficit to defeat Shiloh Hills Christian School in the GCAA State Championship game in McDonough on Saturday, February 11. The game featured a battle of two powerhouse teams in the conference going head to head. [Full Story »]

Stevie Smith graduated from Appling County High School in 1973 and is a member of many agriculture related organizations including the Appling County Young Farmers, where he served as president in 1994, Piney Wood’s Cattleman’s Association, Southeast Georgia Cattlemen’s Association, Georgia Cattlemen’s Association, and is President of the Appling County Stockman’s Association. The Appling County Pirates (13-10 overall, 8-8 Region 2AA) ended the regular season defeating the Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets (8-17, 3-13) 65-55 on Friday, February 10. Leading the way for the Pirates were Ibn Sumner 20 points, Kevin Johnson 11 points, Ronald Handsome 10 points, C.J. Sheriff Benny DeLoach would like to report the following activity of the Appling County Sheriff’s Office.

Feb. 3, answered a call to Pleasant Grove Church Road in reference to a civil matter. A complainant and family member had a dispute over deceased family member’s mobile home and shelter.

Feb. 3, answered a call to Crosby Chapel Church Road in reference to a theft. A complainant stated taken from his property was scrap metal valued at approximately $200.00. Investigation continues. [Full Story »]

Since 2005, Golden Isles Parkway Association has sponsored the Annual Peaches to the Beaches Yard Sale the second Saturday of the year with the goal of promoting tourism and economic development to the communities located along Highway 341. Golden Isles Parkway Association (GIPA) utilizes a vast advertising campaign to promote Peaches to the Beaches Yard Sale. This campaign includes print, radio, digital, and direct mail advertisements aimed at tourists across the United States. [Full Story »]

People who own a small business or are thinking of opening one can receive free, confidential consulting on business management and organization, taxes and licensing, accounting, marketing, financing and other topics. The one-hour consulting sessions will be offered Thursday, February 16, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Baxley/Appling County Chamber of Commerce located at 305 West Parker Street. Professional business consultant David Lewis, and director of the University of Georgia Business Outreach Services office, will offer the sessions. The consulting he said, can help owners of new and existing businesses solve problems. Lewis can also help existing owners prevent problems by doing a complete business analysis.
