James Hall, 78, died Thursday, January 5, 2012. James was born Oct. 10, 1933 in Appling County to the late James Harrell Hall and the late Margeret Rennie Vaughn Hall. He attended the Church of God of Prophecy. Edna O’Quinn Lee, 88, of Bristol, died Monday, January 2, 2012 at the Pavilion in Baxley. Mrs. Lee was born May 23, 1923 in Appling County to the late Benjamin Franklin O’Quinn and the late Rosa Lee Carter O’Quinn. She was a member of Lake Chapel Progressive Primitive Baptist Church. Evelyn L. Black Thornton, 77, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2011 in the Bacon County Hospital in Alma. She was born Nov. 23, 1934 in Appling County and had resided here all of her life. Evelyn was retired and before her retirement she was a seamstress and was employed with Ship-n-Shore for 30 years. She also had worked for the last 14 years with Sarah’s Flower Shop. Ms. Thornton was a member of Carter’s Chapel Church of God of Prophecy where she had served as a Sunday-School Teacher for 38 years. Evelyn was the daughter of the late J. The Appling County Board of Commissioners held their first regularly scheduled meeting of 2012 on Tuesday, January 3 starting at 5:30 p.m. in the Appling County Courthouse Annex. During the meeting the commissioners heard concerns from many local citizens about the proposed changes to the Solid Waste Plan with regard to a proposed recycling/waste processing plant. How busy do you think the Baxley airport is on a weekly basis? Three or four, maybe five planes? Believe it or not, the airport sees as many as 20 to 30 airplanes per week. Many pilots have discovered that Baxley’s low fuel prices and convenience make it an ideal stop. Last April, usually the airport’s busiest month of the year due to an event held in Lakeland, Florida called Sun’n Fun, the airport sold approximately 16,000 gallons of fuel. [Full Story »] 

Alumni football is coming to Baxley

Gridiron Alumni is planning several full contact alumni football games.  Gridiron Alumni travels the nation pitting old football rivals against each other one more time.  

Players are needed to sign up and the first 40 players on each team get to play.  The team that gets 30 people registered first gets home field advantage.  Last year, hundreds of players and thousands of fans swarmed stadiums to watch their hometown heroes strap it on one more time.   [Full Story »]

The Bible says, paraphrasing, … “and everyman did that which was right in his own eyes”, so I BELIEVE THE FIRST QUOTE IS PROBABLY RIGHT. Running for a seat in congress in the state of South Carolina in 1990, applications were sent to me from three separate PACS, with a letter advising me to fill out the enclosed applications and send them in, if they liked what I said, I would be forwarded $5,000.00 for a total of $15,000.00!
