Hospital votes to secure $1.7 million loan

At a called meeting of the Baxley-Appling County Hospital Authority, held Thursday, January 5, members of the authority voted unanimously to secure a loan from a local bank in the amount of $1,700,000.00 to move forward with installation of Meaningful Use throughout the health care system. Meaningful Use is the term for electronic health records that the federal government has mandated (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act mandate) must be installed by hospitals and doctors across the country by 2013. The penalty for not installing the needed computer record system is lower reimbursements on Medicare and Medicaid and loss of reimbursement from the act for installing the system. According to system representatives, the amount of reimbursement could be reduced by 67 percent if the new system is not installed, which could be devastating to the system. [Full Story »]

In last summer’s unbearable heat, I was riding along with the lawn mower’s engine roaring when I heard a voice in my head singing, “Ice cold milk and an Oreo cookie , , , ,” The voice of course was directly from the old television commercial. All those delightful events and fun celebrations that we did over the holidays with our family and special friends will be forever fondly etched in our memories. Almost equally celebrative with Christmas is delighting in some way the passing of the old year and greeting the New Year as it makes its exciting debut; it is that momentous time when we want to make merry in an extraordinary way with those unique people in those exclusive places that exhilarate the rite of passage with us. Gerald “Dennis” Burke, 73, of Jesup, died Monday, January 2, 2012 at his residence after an extended illness. The Appling County native had lived in Wayne County for the past 50 years and was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church. He was a retired supervisor with the Department of Transportation, owner of Burke’s Used Cars for many years, loved to buy and trade anything, and loved traveling to the mountains. [Full Story »]

Robert Clark, 75, died Sunday, January 1, 2012 at his residence. Mr. Clark was born April 1, 1936 in Appling County and had resided here all of his life. He was retired and before his retirement he was a heavy equipment operator for 44 years and was employed with Appling County Road Department. Robert was preceded in death by his son, Robbie Dewayne Clark, a grandson, Lennie Smith III, and three brothers, Frank, Jr., John B. and Edgar L. Clark.
