Kenneth J. Waithe, newly elected District 1 Council Member was sworn in by Superior Court Clerk Floyd Hunter at the regular city council meeting on Jan. 10. Waithe told the council he was looking forward to working with everyone.
Betty Livingston, District 5, and Dr. Esco Hall, Jr., District 2, were reelected to serve additional terms. They were also officially sworn in. Livingston and Hall both stated they were thankful for serving another term and are looking forward to working with everyone as well. [Full Story »]

Laurel Higginbotham of Baxley has been selected to participate in one of the most prestigious organizations on the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College campus, the ABAC Ambassadors.

Hospital votes to secure $1.7 million loan

At a called meeting of the Baxley-Appling County Hospital Authority, held Thursday, January 5, members of the authority voted unanimously to secure a loan from a local bank in the amount of $1,700,000.00 to move forward with installation of Meaningful Use throughout the health care system. Meaningful Use is the term for electronic health records that the federal government has mandated (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act mandate) must be installed by hospitals and doctors across the country by 2013. The penalty for not installing the needed computer record system is lower reimbursements on Medicare and Medicaid and loss of reimbursement from the act for installing the system. According to system representatives, the amount of reimbursement could be reduced by 67 percent if the new system is not installed, which could be devastating to the system. [Full Story »]

The Appling County Board of Commissioners held their first regularly scheduled meeting of 2012 on Tuesday, January 3 starting at 5:30 p.m. in the Appling County Courthouse Annex. During the meeting the commissioners heard concerns from many local citizens about the proposed changes to the Solid Waste Plan with regard to a proposed recycling/waste processing plant.
