Undercover work nets drug dealers
According to Baxley Police Chief James Godfrey, officers from the Baxley Police Department and the Appling County Sheriff’s Office assisted officers from the Altamaha Drug Task Force and the G.B.I. in serving several arrest warrants on offenders who had sold illicit drugs to undercover agents.

Sixteen indicted in Superior Court
Judge E.M. Wilkes, III opened indictments on sixteen subjects in Appling County Superior Court on Jan. 13. The following were indicted as follows:

Thefts, threats, arrests told in sheriff’s report
Sheriff Benny Deloach would like to report the following incidents handled by deputies with the Appling County Sheriff’s Department.
On January 12, answered a call on Herrington Road in reference to a theft. Taken were some old boards off of an old house without permission. Boards were worth about $100.00. Investigation continues.
Jan. 13, answered a call on Tupelo Circle in reference to harassment. The complainant stated that several neighborhood children had been walking by her residence and calling her dog out to the road. The dog follows the children off. Complainant stated that she just wanted the children to leave the dog alone. [Full Story »]

Historic sword is almost in grasp

A group formed to orchestrate the return to Georgia of a ceremonial sword meant for a Columbia County native and War of 1812 hero has raised nearly enough money to purchase it from a private collector.
It will cost $100,000 to buy the Appling Sword, an elaborate ceremonial blade commissioned by the Georgia Legislature in 1814 to be presented to Lt. Col. Daniel Appling. [Full Story »]

ACHS hosts FBLA Leadership Conference
On Wednesday, January 18, 445 Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) students and advisers arrived at Appling County High School to attend the Region 2 Leadership Conference. These students and advisers represented 21 counties in southeast Georgia. Appling County High School’s FBLA served as hosts and advisers, Trudy Greenway and Alison Lamb, were responsible for planning the conference. The purpose of the region conference is for students to compete in performance event areas such as Business Presentations, Client Service, Emerging Business Issues, Impromptu Speaking, Public Speaking I and II, and Job Interview. In addition to the performance events, members of Georgia FBLA also compete online in objective testing and skill testing prior to arriving at the conference. While attending the conference, FBLA members attend workshops conducted by region and state FBLA officers. The culmination of the Region Leadership Conference is the Awards Ceremony where students await to see if they will advance to the State Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Georgia to be held in March.

The Appling County Board of Commissioners held a called meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 10. Following the first of two closed-door sessions for personnel purposes, a motion was made by Commissioner Ronnie Rentz to advertise for and hire an assistant road superintendent. Commissioner Charlie Leggett seconded Rentz’s motion. Chairman Lewis Parker called for a vote and Rentz and Leggett voted in favor of the motion. Commissioners Sarah Boatright, Theodore Wilkerson and Jasper Tomberlin opposed the motion. [Full Story »]
