According to the associated press, Governor Nathan Deal is reporting the Obama administration has approved the new political boundaries in Georgia. Deal spokesman Brian Robinson said the Department of Justice on Friday signed off on the maps for the U.S. House, state Senate and House. [Full Story »] 

City recognizes department supervisors at council meeting

Baxley City Manager Jeff Baxley recognized the department supervisors at the regular council meeting Dec. 22. The manager commended the leadership of the supervisors for the great job that they do. Appling Christian Academy opens basketball season

Following championship seasons in volleyball and football, the ACA Eagles basketball teams will be in the hunt to make their mark in Appling Christian Athletics for the 2011-2012-season. The basketball program features four teams competing in the Georgia Christian Athletic Association. Coaching the junior varsity boys and girls’ teams is Joseph Brock. Seth Rogers took his Temple squad to the postseason for the first time since 2005 and set a school-record for wins with six, while Ricky Tolleson turned Bremen’s 1-3 start into a region runner-up finish and a trip to the Class A state quarterfinals, earning the pair Times-Georgian All-Area Co-Coach of the Year accolades. Maria Juarez-Ramirez and Gerardo Rivaz-Alvarez are pleased to announce the birth of their son, Diego Armando Juarez. Diego was born Dec. 14, 2011 at Appling Healthcare System. He weighed six pounds, 13 ounces and was 18-1/2 inches long at birth. Dr. Catherine Jackson-Evans was the attending physician. [Full Story »]

Santa Claus came by Pine Grove last week and dropped off enough Legos to entertain Trey and Jakey for a while. Even little Will got some, and each dawn this week will find the dining room table covered with various construction projects. We’re excited that they can spend a week. What fun. We’ll have plenty of time to break in the new toys, put together the new puzzles, and read the new books. Santa always brings lots of books. Like any good parent, my wife and I were involved in our children’s lives. Accordingly, I attended countless renditions of The Nutcracker in which my daughter appeared, each year in a different role. This particular year, she was to be the Rat King and, of course, the Little Woman ordered me to be present and dressed to kill as photos were to follow the performance. [Full Story »]

St. Augustine, Florida is an old stomping ground for B. J. and me. Our first memorable trip to this historic city came when we carried our young son Richard to Marineland and we included a visit to the Fountain of Youth and the Old Jail. Since then, we have spent much time there. We have nice condominiums on Vilano Beach and on St. Augustine Beach. It is a fun area with lots of fun things to do. [Full Story »]

Pamela Cranford, 53, of Macon, died Friday, Dec. 16, 2011 at Regency Hospital in East Point. Pamela was a native of Surrency and had lived in Jones County for the past eight years. She attended Highland Hills Baptist Church in Macon. Mrs. Cranford was retired from the Laurens County Board of Education. She was preceded in death by her father, Willie Virgil McCall. Emma Wells Kidd, 89, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011 at the Pavilion in Baxley. Ms. Kidd was born July 4, 1922 in Madison County and had resided in Baxley for the past 33 years. She was retired from the Georgia Baptist Children Home where she was employed as a group leader. Emma was preceded in death by her husband, William Thomas Kidd.
