Sheriff Benny Deloach reports that on October 7, deputies with the Appling County Sheriff’s Department executed a search on Hatch Parkway North after receiving information about the growing of marijuana. Upon executing the search, several plants were found along with items used to grow marijuana. Warrants have been taken for the arrest of Darrell Maxwell Beecher, age 38, and Robyn Hamm, age 37, both of Baxley, for manufacturing marijuana and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Appling County Retired Educators’ meeting was called to order by President Patsy Buchannan on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at the Baxley Church of God Fellowship Hall. Joy Connelley gave the inspiration and then the group stood for a moment of silence for Pauline Smith and ACREA members who had passed away. Bed bugs are on the rise after a dramatic decline in the 1940s and 1950s. A couple of reasons for the return are more world-wide travel and today’s insecticides, although safer for people, are less effective in killing these bugs. Bed bugs are small, flat insects, usually reddish-brown and up to 1/4-inch long. Bed bugs do not fly or hop, but can move quickly across floors and walls. Bed bugs most commonly enter hotels or residences by “hitch-hiking” on a suitcase or backpack, used furniture or other objects moved from one building to another. Homecoming Week at ACHS kicked off Monday, October 3 as spirit week began. Students are participating in dress up days, the spirit chain competition and class float competition.

On Thursday, October 6 at 9:30 am, the school will honor the Grand Marshal, Mrs. Janice Harrelson, as well as the Homecoming Court, at a pep rally. The community and school will then unite on Thursday afternoon for the annual homecoming parade at 5:30. The parade will begin at the red light of Martin Luther King Avenue and end at the hospital.
