During the Appling County Board of Commissioners regularly scheduled meeting held on Tuesday, September 6, a number of local citizens expressed concern about the vote that was taken during a meeting held on August 11 to not allow Lake Mayers to be lowered. Among those expressing concern to the commissioners were Ricky Williams, Jada Miles, Merrell Miles, Andrew Dubberly, Foster Rowland and Roy Herrington about the need and benefits of lowering the lake. The needs presented were to be able to clean out stumps and sludge, to combat bug problems and to help control the marsh build up.

Appling among counties receiving federal agriculture disaster designation
In response to a letter sent by Gov. Nathan Deal, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack determined that, due to the ongoing drought and excessive heat, Appling County would be among the 150 Georgia counties suffering production losses great enough to warrant a secretarial natural disaster designation.

Former deputy arrested on felony charges
According to Appling County Sheriff Benny Deloach, following an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (Douglas Office), warrants were issued for former Appling County Sheriff Deputy Richard Griffin.
Griffin has been arrested on felony warrants for aggravated sodomy, aggravated sexual battery, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, first degree cruelty to children and a misdemeanor warrant for simple battery. [Full Story »]

Pirates defeat Coffee Co.

The Appling County Pirates traveled to Coffee County on Friday, September 9 to face the Trojans (2-2) and were able to pick up the win 28-21. The Pirates are now 3-0 to start the 2011 season and will begin Region 2AA play on Friday, September 16 at home against Brantley County Herons (0-3) before having an open week on September 23. The Pirates will continue play the following week, September 30, as they travel to Toombs County to face the Bulldogs (0-3). All the games are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. [Full Story »]

This week the Appling Christian Academy Eagles played the Faith Christian Crusaders at Eagle Field. This was the toughest team the Eagles have played so far. But the Eagles came out with a 32 to 14 victory.
The Eagles played a good defensive game. The leading solo tacklers were Andrew Phillips with seven, Cameron Carter with six and Brandon Horton with five. Horton and Carter also had interceptions. [Full Story »]
