System in Washington stacks deck against best lawmakers’ ideas

An ultra-conservative Republican senator brought the U.S. Senate to a standstill today with a lengthy and controversial one-man filibuster over what critics are saying is nothing more than a pork-barrel project for Boy Scouts in his home state.

Angry Democrats called Sen. Jefferson Smith’s actions - which included time-wasters such as reading from books and founding documents - a ploy to obstruct progress, cynically using the Boy Scouts for cover. [Full Story »]

The phosphorescent glow of the bridge in my headlights appeared simultaneously with the first fat rain drops on the windshield. No moonlight shone on the river far below. No other cars traveled Highway 221 that Friday night, not in my line of vision anyway. No companion sat in the passenger seat of my ’61 Valiant, unless you want to count Fear. My son decided he wanted to farm a little and since he likes hot peppers, he obtained seed for several kinds of hot peppers; hot, hotter, hotter still, and good Lord Jesus have Mercy.
He planted each tiny seed in small peat containers. I told him he was at least a month early since it was just the first day of February, but his Mother insisted I let him do as he wished. “Let him make his own mistakes,” she said. “He will learn from them.” [Full Story »]

Jasper H. Carter, 66, died Thursday, September 1, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Carter was born Jan. 22, 1945 in Wayne County to the late Dewey Lee and Ruby Owens Carter. He was of the Methodist Faith. Jasper was retired from the Department of Transportation with 34 years of service and 13 years from DSI Security. He was preceded in death by a brother, Hershel Carter. [Full Story »]

Ruth Vetanell Fowler, 73, of Surrency, died Sept. 3, 2011 in the Pavilion. Mrs. Fowler was born April 15, 1938 in Appling County to the late Barney and Elese Rentz Ahl. She was a member of Zion Church of God. Vetanell was a licensed cosmetologist and a Gospel singer for the Gospel Sunshine for approximately 24 years and was salutatorian for her graduating class of 1956. Bobby Merle O’Quinn, 63, died Saturday, September 3, 2011 at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born in Hahira on Aug. 13, 1948 to the late Merle Blanton O’Quinn and a surviving mother, Ruby Nell Register O’Quinn. He was retired from Georgia Power and was Baptist by faith. Bobby was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army, he was an avid NASCAR fan, and also enjoyed the outdoors, especially deer hunting and fishing on the flats and gardening. [Full Story »]

Ruby Stone, 86, died Monday, September 5, 2011 at her residence. Mrs. Stone was born July 26, 1925 in Tattnall County to the late William “Bill” and Lela Wilson Driggers. She was a member of Baxley Christian Center. One of her special gifts was her love and compassion for everyone she met, she always put everyone else above herself.
