Ditch must be uncovered

According to Superintendent Scarlett Copeland and Maintenance and Operations Director Winton Herrin, the Army Corp of Engineers has informed the Appling County Board of Education that a ditch that was covered over adjacent to the Appling County High School (ACHS) baseball field must now be uncovered. In a letter (below) from Herrin to Copeland presented at the board’s monthly meeting held on September 12, Herrin explains that the ditch has to be restored. [Full Story »] 

Police respond to unresponsive person on Alpine

According to a report, on Sunday, Sept. 18 at approximately 9:23 a.m., officers of the Baxley Police Department and the Appling County Sheriff’s Office responded to 633 Alpine Drive, Baxley, to assist the EMS unit on a call to unresponsive person. On arrival EMS personnel advised the officers that the resident, Kellie Sue Carter, 26, was deceased. [Full Story »]

That’s right fellow taxpayers, we took another one on the chin recently as we learned that the White House’s darling of Green Energy, Solyndra, shut its doors the last day of August. As I sat listening to the minister in church this morning, I mentally jumped up and shouted “Amen!” (I couldn’t do it physically because the staid Baptist that lives in me just wouldn’t permit.) He was talking about the plight of the post office and how much he misses old- fashioned, hand-written letters. I tried to remember the last time I received a letter in the mail-a real letter that someone took the time to sit down and write to me. By hand, mind you. Computer generated emails don’t count. Once upon a time, way back in the bad old days in the turpentine gulag, a situation appeared. Someone started selling illicit and tainted spirits in the quarters and the laborers or, hands, as they were known then, were unable to go to work on Monday morning or any day joining Monday. The quality of the moonshine was so poor it was really nothing more than liquid poison. Its maker used a radiator as a condenser and to make matters worse he did not catch and discard the fusel oil, a poison, created during the distilling process. [Full Story »]

B. J. and I love to travel—and eat. However, in recent months, as per instructions from our Dr. and Weight Watcher Mentor Cathy Daniels, we have reduced the portions—well, a little.

We have covered a sizable section of the world and eaten at a goodly number of places. We have dined at beaneries where you can go barefooted and shirtless and throw your trash on the floor. In contrast, we have partaken at glamorous bistros where some schooling in the finer points of proper etiquette is helpful and a tuxedo and a formal evening gown are required dress. [Full Story »]

Betty was born to the late Frank Chancey and the late Cleo Lightsey Chancey Jan. 11, 1940 in Appling County and had lived here most of her life. His son, Roy, Jr. related the following information about his father. Roy D. Greene, Sr. grew up poor in Georgia. He was a pilot in the U.S. Air Force during WWII. He was very successful in sales and as a business owner throughout his life. He was owner/president of a company he founded, “Truk Info. Inc.” until his passing. Hattie Elizabeth Stone McNeal, 87, of Graham, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011. Mrs. McNeal was born in Atlanta but lived most of her life in Jeff Davis County. She was the daughter of the late Snow Luella Stone Rowell and the wife of the late Edward David McNeal. Mrs. McNeal was preceded in death by a son, Michael David McNeal and a brother, Shirley Stone.
