A friend on facebook shared the following thought this week. I know abortion can be a divisive issue, but I’ve never heard it explained in this manner.
A worried woman went to her gynecologist and said, “Doctor, I have a serious problem and desperately need your help! My baby is not even one-year-old and I’m pregnant again. I don’t want kids so close together.”
So the doctor said, “OK and what do you want me to do?”

What? A family reunion?
Back in the early summer when watermelons were ripening on the vine and peas blossomed in profusion, three of Larry’s cousins stopped by to visit. We sat in the living room to talk. I listened to childhood stories that didn’t include me. No Ellis blood flows in my veins. During the course of the conversation, Sherry said, “We ought to put together a family reunion.”

Walk - Don’t Walk
I couldn’t get my brother on the phone so, “Shoot Fire, I’ll walk,” I said to myself. “This is Douglas and someone will recognize me and will pick me up before I can get very far,” I said as I left the auto dealership.
Famous last words I began to think as I tried to cross 441 in front of Wendy’s. If it had not been for those cones recently placed in the median I would have been road kill as the motorists paid no heed to a 235 pound man trying to cross the road. [Full Story »]

Socialism versus Capitalism
Socialism is the stage of society, in Marxist doctrine, coming between the capitalist stage and the communist stage, in which private ownership of the means of production has been eliminated.
Capitalism, on the other hand, is an economic system in which all or most of the means of production and distribution, such as land, factories, communications, and transportation systems, are privately owned and operated in a relatively competitive environment through the investment of capital to produce profits. Troy Davis execution raises questions for reader
Dear Editor,
The execution of Troy Davis, in light of the doubt of his conviction as being guilty of murder, is evident of the need for the American justice System to be looked into for possible changes to be made to insure if there is any doubt of a person being innocent or guilty before being put to death. My prayer is that earnest praying people continue to pray about changes in this system that allows anyone to be put to death when there is as much doubt, as was presented in this case. [Full Story »]

Another half billion dollars down the drain
That’s right fellow taxpayers, we took another one on the chin recently as we learned that the White House’s darling of Green Energy, Solyndra, shut its doors the last day of August. The company was supposed to be one of President Obama’s highly touted green energy companies specializing in solar energy products.

Gone with the wind
As I sat listening to the minister in church this morning, I mentally jumped up and shouted “Amen!” (I couldn’t do it physically because the staid Baptist that lives in me just wouldn’t permit.) He was talking about the plight of the post office and how much he misses old- fashioned, hand-written letters. I tried to remember the last time I received a letter in the mail-a real letter that someone took the time to sit down and write to me. By hand, mind you. Computer generated emails don’t count.

Tales from the Turpentine Archipelago
Once upon a time, way back in the bad old days in the turpentine gulag, a situation appeared. Someone started selling illicit and tainted spirits in the quarters and the laborers or, hands, as they were known then, were unable to go to work on Monday morning or any day joining Monday. The quality of the moonshine was so poor it was really nothing more than liquid poison. Its maker used a radiator as a condenser and to make matters worse he did not catch and discard the fusel oil, a poison, created during the distilling process.

First-rate cuisine
B. J. and I love to travel—and eat. However, in recent months, as per instructions from our Dr. and Weight Watcher Mentor Cathy Daniels, we have reduced the portions—well, a little.
We have covered a sizable section of the world and eaten at a goodly number of places. We have dined at beaneries where you can go barefooted and shirtless and throw your trash on the floor. In contrast, we have partaken at glamorous bistros where some schooling in the finer points of proper etiquette is helpful and a tuxedo and a formal evening gown are required dress. [Full Story »]

No room for Medicare patients
By Jane M. Orient, M.D.
When I went into solo practice of internal medicine in 1981, it was very easy to get a doctor to see a Medicare patient. All I had to do was make a phone call. A courteous receptionist answered. If the doctor couldn't come to the phone right away, I could count on a prompt callback. [Full Story »]

Where good ideas go to die
System in Washington stacks deck against best lawmakers’ ideas
(Editor’s note: The following editorial was written by the Augusta Editorial Staff and published on Sunday, September 11)
An ultra-conservative Republican senator brought the U.S. Senate to a standstill today with a lengthy and controversial one-man filibuster over what critics are saying is nothing more than a pork-barrel project for Boy Scouts in his home state.
Angry Democrats called Sen. Jefferson Smith’s actions - which included time-wasters such as reading from books and founding documents - a ploy to obstruct progress, cynically using the Boy Scouts for cover. [Full Story »]

Danger!
The phosphorescent glow of the bridge in my headlights appeared simultaneously with the first fat rain drops on the windshield. No moonlight shone on the river far below. No other cars traveled Highway 221 that Friday night, not in my line of vision anyway. No companion sat in the passenger seat of my ’61 Valiant, unless you want to count Fear. No roommate was coming to Hazlehurst to spend the weekend with me. Stifling and still, only solitude surrounded me out there in the backside of nowhere.

Gardening
My son decided he wanted to farm a little and since he likes hot peppers, he obtained seed for several kinds of hot peppers; hot, hotter, hotter still, and good Lord Jesus have Mercy.
He planted each tiny seed in small peat containers. I told him he was at least a month early since it was just the first day of February, but his Mother insisted I let him do as he wished. “Let him make his own mistakes,” she said. “He will learn from them.” [Full Story »]

Shagging with wild horses
Growing up down on the farm in Toombs County we farm boys missed out on some of the finer points of the trendy social scene, among them, fancy dancing. We pursued more macho activities like hunting and fishing and wild cars.

The storm is raging; get your ticket now
Dear Editor,
What’s happening to America today? What is God saying to us? So many times He speaks and we don’t pay any attention to him. We have always been a blessed nation, spiritually and in wealth, but we have forgotten where we come from. We need to start listening, “God is angry.” Just look around and think about what’s happening in today’s world. [Full Story »]
