Catherine Kirkland, 69, died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. She was born June 14, 1942 in Appling County and had lived here most of her life. Catherine was a homemaker and had attended Spring Branch Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Charles Kirkland and the late Lillie Yawn Young and the late Seaborn Young.

David Larry Wolfe, Sr., died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011 in Jeff Davis Hospital in Hazlehurst. Mr. Wolfe was born in Appling County and had lived here most of his life. He was retired and before retirement was employed with Rayonier as a construction worker. Wolfe attended Carter’s Chapel Church of God of Prophecy. He was the son of the late Benjamin Nathaniel Wolfe and the late Virtie O’Bright Wolfe.

John Terry Carter, 42, died Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011 in Appling Healthcare System. Mr. Carter was born Oct. 25, 1968 in Naples, FL and had resided in Baxley for most of his life. He was a pipe fitter and was a member of Midway Baptist Church. He was the son of the late John Leon Carter and Sarah Ruth Miller Burkett. He was preceded in death by a son, John Wade Carter.

Betty Dubberly Dean, 71, died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011 at St. Joseph Hospital in Savannah. Betty was born to the late Frank Chancey and the late Cleo Lightsey Chancey Jan. 11, 1940 in Appling County and had lived here most of her life. She was a licensed cosmetologist and was self-employed. Mrs. Dean attended Harvest Chapel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dudley Dean and a daughter, Lynn Griffin Mann.

Susie L. Gibbens, 83, of Temple, Texas, formerly of Baxley, died Friday, September 16, 2011 in a Temple hospital. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 17, at Heights Baptist Church in Temple with Dr. Tom Henderson and the Rev. Billy Koinm officiating. Burial was at Pinelawn Memorial Gardens in Bacon County, at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 24.

Robert Gordon, 68, of Tampa, FL, passed away peacefully at home in the presence of his family on September 6, 2011. Robert was predeceased by his parents, James Gordon, Sr. and Alice Miles Gordon King, and his parents-in-law, JC Lightsey and Allene Morris Lightsey. Roy D. Greene, Sr., 88, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2011 in Appling Healthcare System. Roy was born Sept. 5, 1923 in Dodge County and had resided in Baxley since 1977. His son, Roy, Jr. related the following information about his father. Roy D. Greene, Sr. grew up poor in Georgia. He was a pilot in the U.S. Air Force during WWII. He was very successful in sales and as a business owner throughout his life. He was owner/president of a company he founded, “Truk Info. Inc.” until his passing. He loved the outdoors and especially the water.

Hattie Elizabeth Stone McNeal, 87, of Graham, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011. Mrs. McNeal was born in Atlanta but lived most of her life in Jeff Davis County. She was the daughter of the late Snow Luella Stone Rowell and the wife of the late Edward David McNeal. Mrs. McNeal was preceded in death by a son, Michael David McNeal and a brother, Shirley Stone. She was a homemaker and a member of Consolation Baptist Church.

Thomas D. Stewart, Sr., 91, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011 in Bacon County Hospital. Mr. Stewart was born July 24, 1920 in Ware County to the late William Warren Stewart and the late Maude Burns Stewart. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Baxley Kiwanis. Thomas was a veteran of WWII having served in the United States Navy and was the owner of Stewart and Associates. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Nell Veal Stewart.

Jasper H. Carter, 66, died Thursday, September 1, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Carter was born Jan. 22, 1945 in Wayne County to the late Dewey Lee and Ruby Owens Carter. He was of the Methodist Faith. Jasper was retired from the Department of Transportation with 34 years of service and 13 years from DSI Security. He was preceded in death by a brother, Hershel Carter.

Ruth Vetanell Fowler, 73, of Surrency, died Sept. 3, 2011 in the Pavilion. Mrs. Fowler was born April 15, 1938 in Appling County to the late Barney and Elese Rentz Ahl. She was a member of Zion Church of God. Vetanell was a licensed cosmetologist and a Gospel singer for the Gospel Sunshine for approximately 24 years and was salutatorian for her graduating class of 1956. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Ahl.
