Appling Applause bringing on the hits
On September 5-7, members of the Appling Applause show choir met for their annual camp to prepare the music and choreography for the new school year. This Appling County High School group is composed of 40 singers and ten instrumentalists and is under the direction of Karen Davis.

Baxley Lions Club Rodeo to feature a Stick Horse Race
On October 28-29, the Baxley Lions Club will sponsor a full-scale Professional Cowboy Association Rodeo at the Tri-County Fairgrounds. There will be Bareback Bronc Riding, Steer Wrestling, Calf Roping, Saddle Bronc Riding, Cowgirls’ Breakaway Roping, Women’s Barrel Racing, Team Roping and Bull Riding. There will also be two children’s events: the Calf Scramble and the Stick Horse Race.

Deloach reports on a number of incidents
Sheriff Benny Deloach reports the following incidents handled by deputies with the Appling County Sheriff’s Department recently.
On September 14, deputies answered a call to the Huddle House parking lot in reference to a theft. The complainant stated that he left his vehicle parked and when he returned he was missing a 9mm Taurus Pistol. Complainant’s vehicle was left unlocked. Investigation continues. [Full Story »]

DOT announces traffic shift for U.S. Highway 1
The Georgia Department of Transportation announces a traffic lane shift will occur on U.S. 1/S.R. 4 starting at the Bacon County Line and extending north of S.R. 15 in Appling County starting on today, September 28. Traffic will be shifted onto the newly constructed lanes of U.S.1/S.R. 4. The traffic shift is necessary to complete the final phase of this widening and reconstruction project.

Appling HealthCare System offers low-cost medications through government prescription program
Appling HealthCare System and healthcare technology company SUNRx today announced the launch of a new partnership that will provide discount prescriptions to patients in southeast Georgia.
“This year marks our 60th year serving the citizens of the greater Appling County area,” said Dale Spell, CEO of Appling HealthCare System. “We are excited to recognize this moment in our organization’s history by introducing the new discount drug program that will make low-cost medications available to our patients and expand access to high-quality health care in our community.”
Appling HealthCare System’s discount prescription program is part of the Federal 340B Program. This government program grants health organizations significant discounts on medications and allows them to extend the savings to patients without insurance coverage. [Full Story »]

WIB Members attend Board Training
Workforce Investment Board members, Duane Whitley, Doug Rooks and Ronald Burkett, attended the annual Workforce Investment Board training held on St. Simons Island, August 26 - August 28.
The training is held annually to allow Workforce Investment Board (WIB) members the opportunity to come together to identify key issues and to develop detailed work plans to achieve the goals established for the WIB. Mayor Billy Trapnell, City of Metter, was the keynote speaker for this year’s event. He talked about ways to provide the valuable services offered through Workforce Development with limited funding. Misuse of tree stands creates hazards for hunters
Though commonly used by deer hunters everywhere, tree stands often are improperly installed and, as a result, are considered the leading cause of hunting-related incidents, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division.

Sheriff Benny DeLoach would like to report the following activity of the Appling County Sheriff’s Office.
On Sept. 9, a complainant came to the sheriff’s office to report a fraud/swindle incident. The complainant stated she had been notified that she had won a large amount of money and a 2011 Mercedes Benz. In turn the complainant had to mail money to the sweepstakes to receive her winnings. The complainant complied, but has not received any monies or the vehicle.
PLEASE BE AWARE OF SCAMS!!!
If you receive phone calls or mail stating you are a sweepstakes winner, that you are to send monies to receive your winnings, please contact the sheriff’s office. This also includes solicitations, please verify before sending money. If you have not entered a sweepstakes or bought a lotto ticket, you are not a winner. If monies are sent out of the United States there is no way to prosecute the case. [Full Story »]

The following are highlights of incidents that were handled by officers of the Baxley Police Department.

Ditch must be uncovered

According to Superintendent Scarlett Copeland and Maintenance and Operations Director Winton Herrin, the Army Corp of Engineers has informed the Appling County Board of Education that a ditch that was covered over adjacent to the Appling County High School (ACHS) baseball field must now be uncovered. In a letter (below) from Herrin to Copeland presented at the board’s monthly meeting held on September 12, Herrin explains that the ditch has to be restored. [Full Story »]
