Billy Joe Hoover, 65, died Monday, August 22, 2011 at Altamaha Healthcare Nursing Home in Jesup. Mr. Hoover was born Oct. 2, 1945 in Hampton, S.C. to the late Joe and Nell Sauls Hoover. He was a member of Spring Branch Baptist Church and a member of Iron Workers Local 709. Mr. Hoover was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Hoover.

Pauline Hartley Smith
Pauline Hartley Smith, 77, died Thursday, August 25, 2011. Pauline was born Nov. 2, 1933 to the late Daniel Harvey Hartley and the late Mattie Estell Gordon Hartley. She was a member of the Baxley Church of God where she was a member of the ladies ministries, Young at Heart and the 55 Club. Mrs. Smith won the hearts of all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edsel Smith, a granddaughter, Jill Smith and a sister, Vonice Deen.

Pirates open season with shutout win over Dodge Co.
The Appling County Pirates opened the regular season on Friday, August 26 against the Dodge County Indians at Jimmy Swain Stadium. The Pirates were able to get the win 20-0 and will travel to face neighboring Wayne County Yellow Jackets on Friday, September 2 with the game scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. The Yellow Jackets are coming off a 28-28 tie with Windsor Forest.

This week the Appling Christian Academy Eagles traveled to Griffin to play Skipstone Academy Warriors. Kick off started at 7:30 p.m. with the temperature at 100 degrees. The Eagles were low on players, dressing out only 13 players. The Warriors had 17 players and had size to their advantage. The game was long and hot, but the Eagles came out with a 42-8 win.
