Doris Irene Rentz Carter, 89, died Tuesday, August 23, 2011 in Appling Healthcare System. Mrs. Carter was born Dec. 8, 1921 in Appling County to the late Robert William and Mildred Mary Ann Mann Rentz. She was a member of the Memorial Free Will Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. Doris was retired from Georgia Baptist Children’s Home with 28 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Clennon Carter, and two sisters and two brothers.

Billy Joe Hoover, 65, died Monday, August 22, 2011 at Altamaha Healthcare Nursing Home in Jesup. Mr. Hoover was born Oct. 2, 1945 in Hampton, S.C. to the late Joe and Nell Sauls Hoover. He was a member of Spring Branch Baptist Church and a member of Iron Workers Local 709. Mr. Hoover was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Hoover.

Pauline Hartley Smith, 77, died Thursday, August 25, 2011. Pauline was born Nov. 2, 1933 to the late Daniel Harvey Hartley and the late Mattie Estell Gordon Hartley. She was a member of the Baxley Church of God where she was a member of the ladies ministries, Young at Heart and the 55 Club. Mrs. Smith won the hearts of all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edsel Smith, a granddaughter, Jill Smith and a sister, Vonice Deen.

Betty Ann Berger Dixon, 85, of Savannah, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at her home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Melissa Eileen Flowers, 50, of St. Mary’s, GA, passed away August 23, 2011 at Hospice of the Golden Isles.

Mrs. Corine Carter Allen, 84, died August 15, 2011 at Hospice Satilla House, Inc. in Waycross. She was born March 2, 1927 in Fairhope, Alabama to the late Marion Carter, Sr. and the late Sallie Coleman Carter.
Mrs. Allen was the wife of the late Joseph Oscar Allen. She was a dedicated member of Scott’s Chapel United Methodist Church, one of the founding members of Gardenia Social Club, Progressive Charity Club, and Ida Mae Chapter #299 Order of the Eastern Star, Girls Social Club and the Pierce County Senior Citizens Service Center. Mr. Arnold was born Feb. 13, 1944 in Wayne County to the late Joseph Emmett Arnold and the late Verdia Mae Perry Arnold. He was a former resident of Appling County, but had lived in Jacksonville for the last 40 years.

Virginia Griffin Drennan, 101, died Thursday, August 11, 2011 in Huntsville, Alabama. Mrs. Drennan was born Jan. 10, 1910 in Pinewood, S.C. to the late Joseph Reid Griffin and the late Sarah Isabella Stokes Griffin. She was a former member of the First Methodist Church of Baxley. Mrs. Drennan was a retired schoolteacher and a loving mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther White Drennan and the youngest of nine children, Ida, Reid, Ellen, Julian, Henry, Eugene, Newell and Edwin.

Mrs. Oralene James Morris, 88, of Lyons, died Saturday, August 13, 2011 in the Pavilion in Baxley after an extended illness. She was a native of Toombs County, and lived there all of her life until moving to Baxley with her daughter five years ago due to family illness. She retired from the City Florist in Lyons, and Morris Finance and Tax Service in Baxley. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lyons. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Toombs County Chapter #546 where she served as the secretary for ten years. She was a member of the Order of the Amaranth and a community volunteer. Mrs. Morris was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Morris; a son, Donald J. Morris, and two brothers, Glynn James and Coye James.

Memorial services were held at Old Field Cemetery Saturday, August 6 for Alvin Jerome Hall, Sr. (who died Jan. 2, 2011) with the Rev. Dr. H. M. Moss officiating. He was cremated and an inurnment ceremony was held. Musical selections were by family and friends.

Hazel Sellers Malone
Hazel Sellers Malone, 80, of St. Mary’s, died Monday, August 1, 2011 in St. Mary’s after a lengthy illness. She was born Nov. 14, 1930 in Appling County to the late Will and Lois Kennedy Sellers. Hazel grew up in the Zion Community and was a graduate of Surrency High School. She made her home in St. Mary’s since 1954 and worked as an administrative secretary for the Gillman Paper Company until her retirement. She was of the Baptist Faith.
