The 2011 Georgia reapportionment/redistricting process has been interesting for Appling County to say the least. First the county and the City of Baxley were literally split in half in state house redistricting and now, according to the proposed congressional districts map released by the joint Georgia Legislative and Congressional Reapportionment Committee, Appling will be moved out of the First Congressional District that is represented by U.S. Representative Jack Kingston (R - Savannah). The map shows the county could be in the 12th Congressional District, which is represented by U.S. Representative John Barrow (D - Savannah). [Full Story »] 

Black named JP Associates Teacher of the Year for 2012

Elaine Black, a special education teacher from Appling County Elementary School has been named the JP Associates Teacher of the Year for 2012. JP Associates is an International Consulting Firm that has worked with Appling County teachers for eight years. Ms. Black was chosen out of all the sites that the firm works with and received the award in Atlanta this July. Appling Schools to send out Title I-A Schools’ Parental Involvement Policies

During the weeks of August 29, through September 9, Appling County Middle School, Appling County Elementary School, Altamaha Elementary School, Fourth District Elementary School, and Appling County Primary School will send out their parental involvement policies that will be in effect for this current school year. Each policy or plan is developed by parents, teachers, and administrators to increase parent participation and promote parent-school interaction. Calling all ACCHS Class of 2001 Graduates! ACCHS’s Graduating Class of 2001 is gearing up for its 10-year reunion. The event will be held Saturday, October 8, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at the former People’s State Bank Lodge at Lake Mayers. Tickets are $40 for a single or $75 for a couple. Appling County Prekindergarten Students were welcomed to school on Tuesday, August 23. Prior to beginning school, all students and their parents had the opportunity to visit the school they would be attending through Open House. Open House allowed all students and parents to visit their classroom and teacher. Sheriff Benny DeLoach would like to report the following activity of the Appling County Sheriff’s Office.

Aug. 11, answered a call on Laurel Court in reference to a theft. Taken was a 1993 Ford Crown Victoria, gray in color. Investigation revealed location of vehicle. Alfred Johnson, 33, of Baxley, was arrested and charged with theft by taking and removal or falsification of identification number on vehicle. [Full Story »] 

Heller gets 20 behind bars

District Attorney Jackie Johnson announces that on August 18, an Appling County jury found 62 year old Willie Gene Heller of Baxley guilty of one count of possession of cocaine. Superior Court Judge E.M. Wilkes presided over the trial and sentenced Heller to twenty (20) years in prison followed by ten (10) years probation under the recidivist statute as a repeat offender.

Assistant District Attorney Jan Kennedy presented the case for the State and Daveniya Fisher and Kimberly Copeland represented the defendant. The District Attorney’s Office would like to thank Officer Kyle McNeal and the Altamaha Drug Task Force for their investigation on the case. [Full Story »] 

Settlement reached in Graham council case

On August 3 members of the Graham City Council reached a settlement agreement in a case that has been ongoing for an extended period of time. The plaintiff in the case, John Fogarty, filed suit against the City of Graham, Mayor Lonnie Crosby and Jerome Brinkley. [Full Story »]
