Carlene Francis Carter, 85, of Odum, died Wednesday, July 20, 2011 in the Appling Healthcare System. Carlene Francis was born Sept. 21, 1925 in Toombs County to the late Charlie Wesley Williams and the late Dosie Yawn Williams. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Wayne County. Mrs. Carter was a retired teacher from the Appling County Board of Education and a member of the Appling County Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed quilting.

Bobby Lee Gay, Sr.
Bobby Lee Gay, Sr., 64, died Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Gay was born Dec. 30, 1946 in Baxley to the late J. W. Gay and the late Mattie Lee Stone Gay and had resided here all of his life. He was retired and before retirement he worked as a backhoe operator for Appling County Road Department. He was a member of Philippi Baptist Church but was attending Spring Branch Baptist Church.

Wynelle Eason Hughes

“Let me live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man.” So read the old family sampler Wynelle Eason Hughes of LaPorte, Ind., found in a closet and showed her daughter on Friday, July 15, just before they left for lunch. Less than two hours later, Nel experienced a major stroke, and early on Sunday, July 17, she died a peaceful death in LaPorte at the age of 90. Her daughter Ronda was with her throughout. Zackery Marvin Lee, 65, died Sunday, July 17, 2011 in Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. Mr. Lee was born May 16, 1946 in Atlanta to the late Marvin Turner Lee and the late Zada Jane Beasley Bennett. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. Zackery was preceded in death by a special friend, Lewis Kennedy.

Ben Weaver
Ben Weaver, 79, died Saturday, July 16, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. Mr. Weaver was born March 11, 1932 in Appling County to the late P. B. Weaver and the late Vinie Wiggins Weaver. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon and church treasurer for many years. Ben served 16 years as county commissioner of District 4 and was employed by Appling County Board of Education as a bus driver for 32 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Carter Weaver and five sisters and three brothers.

Junior B. Carter, 70, died Monday, July 11, 2011 at Chandler Hospital in Savannah. Mr. Carter was born Dec. 21, 1940 in Baxley and had resided in Jesup. He was retired and before retirement he was working in agriculture. Junior was the son of the late Bernice Carter and the late Retter Carter.

Charles Edward “Charlie” Beach, 62, died Friday, July 1, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Beach was born Nov. 2, 1948 in Jeff Davis County to the late Allen T. Beach and the late Mary Louise Andrews Beach. He was a member of Friendship Congregational Christian Church and was a veteran of the United States Army. He had over 30 years of law enforcement service in Appling County. Mr. Beach was preceded in death by a sister, Brenda Beach.

Dr. James Bedingfield, Sr.
Dr. James Bedingfield, Sr., 90, died Monday, July 4, 2011 at his residence in Milton. Dr. Bedingfield was born March 8, 1921 in Cadwell to the late Reason Andrew Bedingfield and the late Flaurie Proctor Bedingfield. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Baxley. Dr. Bedingfield was a graduate of UGA and the Medical College of Georgia. He started his practicing of medicine from 1948 to 2007 and delivered over 1,000 babies. Dr. Bedingfield was a member of USGA, Medical College of Georgia Alumni AMA. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Aircorp having served as a rank of Captain. Dr. Bedingfield was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Bedingfield and a sister, Fannie Jo Bedingfield Holt.

Nathaniel (Pete Jr.) Jones, the son of the late Nathaniel Sr. and Ella Jones was born in Jesup on Aug. 28, 1931 and died Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at Appling Nursing and Rehabilitation Pavilion in Baxley. He was a member of Surrency Grove Baptist Church. In addition to his parents his wife, Annie Ruth Jones, his daughter, Mary E. Jordan, brothers, Joe Louis and Robert Jones and a sister, Almeda Hayes, also preceded him in death.
