The following are highlights of incidents that were handled by officers of the Baxley Police Department over the past couple of weeks.
June 6 at approximately 7:00 a.m., answered a call to RB Pump in reference to a theft. On arrival the complainant told officers that person(s) unknown had removed a blue in color Miller 400P welding machine from his shop. The stolen welder has been entered in the GCIC computer network as being stolen.

The Baxley News-Banner was informed by Appling County Clerk of Court Floyd Hunter on Monday, July 11 that those called for Civil Petit Jury Duty for July 18 do not have to report to court for duty.

A monitoring team for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) visited the Appling County School System on June 19 - 21. Since August 2010 the system has been on “Probation” with the SACS, which is one step from losing accreditation. Following the June 19 - 21 visit, the team issued a new report that states that the system has moved one step closer to totally regaining its coveted accreditation moving to a status of now “Warned”. Secretary of State visits

Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp visited Baxley and spoke at the South Georgia Republican Luncheon on July 6 as part of his campaign promise to attend at least one GOP event each month. Kemp spoke to the crowd of around thirty Republicans about how the Secretary of State’s office has made cuts, and how it has improved. [Full Story »]

Required: fitted crib sheet, towel or small blanket (please keep in mind the size of our cubbies when choosing covers; a beach towel will work well.), Book bag (large enough to keep a folder and covers in) and a change of clothes (please place in a Ziploc with name on the bag). Make sure your child’s name is on all items with a permanent marker.
Wish List: box of tissues, baby wipes, Clorox wipes, one-inch white, clear-view cover, three-ring binder (for memory books) and for the nurse: band aids (any size) and baby wipes. [Full Story »]

Walden reunion planned
The sixth North GA Walden Descendants Reunion will be held on Saturday, July 23, in Dahlonega (of which many relatives are from Appling County) at the Lumpkin County Parks and Recreation Center, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Man drowns trying to swim across Altamaha
On July 2, at 5:40 p.m., Appling County 911 received a call in reference to a drowning at the Altamaha River near Plant Hatch. Witnesses stated to investigating officers that Johnny Ray Adams, a white male age 45, attempted to swim the river from the Toombs County side to the Appling County side and that Adams went under on the Appling County side and did not resurface.

High school track facility approved

The Appling County Board of Education voted to move forward with the construction of a new track facility adjacent to the high school baseball/softball fields at its Monday, June 27 meeting. In addition to approving the track, board members also approved a request to go ahead and build restroom and concession facilities at the new track. Maintenance and Operations Director Winton Herrin explained that he had received requests from the administration at the high school as well as a number of citizens to build the additional facilities, adding that they were a part of the original design. Herrin estimated that the cost to build the additional facilities would cost approximately $100,000.00. He also explained that there would be no cost added back to the overall project since the board had saved in a number of other areas, including saving approximately $800,000.00 in site prep for the new Pre-K facility. Appling receives federal agricultural disaster designation
In response to a letter sent by Gov. Nathan Deal, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack determined that, due to the ongoing drought, Appling County is one of 22 Georgia counties that suffered production losses great enough to warrant a secretarial natural disaster designation.

Walker honored at council meeting

Baxley City Manager Jeff Baxley read a resolution in recognition of Councilman Eugene Walker, Jr. for his years of service to the city at the regular Baxley City Council meeting held June 29. Councilman Walker gave his resignation at the last meeting. Mayor Steve Rigdon announced that Councilman Walker was in the hospital due to illness and was unable to attend the recognition. He also added the council will present the resolution to him at another meeting. Council members gave favorable comments about serving with Walker. The council chamber meeting room was full of city employers and citizens who came to pay their respects in honor of Walker’s recognition. [Full Story »]

Murder, suicide
At approximately 12:10 p.m. on June 30 Appling Dispatch received a call from an employer asking that the Appling Sheriff’s Office check a residence at 2148 Oliff Thornton Road in Southeast Appling County to check on an employee that had not showed up for work, which was unusual for her. When the deputy arrived at the scene, the back door of the residence was open and when he went inside he saw two bodies that were apparently DOA.

Mark Nail told The News-Banner that a twister missed hitting his house by about 50 yards on Tuesday, June 28 at approximately 8:00 p.m.

ACPS Supply Lists for the 2011-2012 school year given
Appling County Primary School Principal Brenda Harvey, teachers, and staff members are looking forward to an outstanding school year. In preparation for the school year, each grade level at ACPS provides a list of supplies that each student will need for that grade level. This will assist parents in preparing students for the new school year. The following is a list of supplies requested for each grade:

Hospital Authority meets
On June 27 the Baxley-Appling County Hospital Authority met for a regular monthly meeting. In attendance were board members Jesse Alderman, Greg Black, Donnie Head, Peggy Miles, Julie Scarborough, Jeffery Simmons and James Twiggs. Staff present included CEO Dale Spell, ICFO Farrell Turner, COO/CNO Joyce Alderman, Director of Marketing Robin Crosby, Director Pharmacy Terri Westberry and Board and Medical Staff Coordinator Tina Johnson. Guests present at the meeting were County Manager Lee Lewis and Commissioner Jasper Tomberlin.
