The date of location approval is May 20, 2011.
This project consists of the replacement of three structurally deficient two-lane bridges on US 1/SR 4 over the Altamaha River, Overflow 1 and Williams Creek. The project begins at mile post 20.48 in Appling County and ends at mile post 1.74 in Toombs County. This project is in land lots 618 and 619 and also lies within Georgia Militia District 43 and has a total length of 2.56 miles.
The proposed new bridges will be built on new alignment to the east of the existing bridges while traffic is maintained on the existing roadway. The proposer roadway typical section has two 12 ft. travel lanes with 4 ft. paved shoulders.

The date of location approval is May 20, 2011.
This project consists of the replacement of three structurally deficient two-lane bridges on US 1/SR 4 over the Altamaha River, Overflow 1 and Williams Creek. The project begins at mile post 20.48 in Appling County and ends at mile post 1.74 in Toombs County. This project is in land lots 618 and 619 and also lies within Georgia Militia District 43 and has a total length of 2.56 miles.
The proposed new bridges will be built on new alignment to the east of the existing bridges while traffic is maintained on the existing roadway. The proposer roadway typical section has two 12 ft. travel lanes with 4 ft. paved shoulders.

Commissioners approve work on Lake Tara Dam

The Appling County Board of Commissioners held their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, June 7 at 5:30 p.m. at the Appling County Courthouse Annex. During the meeting the Commissioners approved a proposal from Golder Associates to do exploratory drilling on the dam located at Lake Tara. The work includes two 25-foot holes and two 50-foot holes to be drilled in order to evaluate the dam and find out if further work will be needed. The cost of the drilling will cost $35,000.00. A motion to approve the work was made by Commissioner Charlie Leggett with a second from Commissioner Ronnie Rentz. The motion was approved by all in attendance. [Full Story »]

Gov. Deal requests disaster designation for Appling County
Last week, Gov. Nathan Deal sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack requesting that 22 Georgia counties be declared disaster areas in response to Georgia’s ongoing drought. Deal expressed that the drought, beginning in December 2010, has caused extensive damage to crops. With the disaster designation, farmers in those counties would become eligible to apply for emergency loans and other benefits provided by the Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008.

The fine art of eating watermelon
I am truly thankful for the rain that fell on Pine Grove this afternoon. We sat and watched as giant drops fell to a thirsty earth, but rain fell faster than the ground could soak it up. It’s been a while since we saw puddles in the yard. Before it completely stopped, Larry and I went out to check out our gardens. Everything was beautiful, appearing fresh and cool and new. When we surveyed the watermelons, they seemed to have grown during the downpour. We could hardly believe our eyes. There’s no longer a need to push aside the leaves to look for them. They’ve gotten big enough to push aside the leaves themselves.
