Williams gets life sentences for brutal attack

District Attorney Jackie Johnson announces that on June 22, an Appling County jury found Joseph Curtis Williams guilty of kidnapping with bodily injury, aggravated assault, aggravated battery and rape. Chief Superior Court Judge Amanda F. Williams sentenced Joseph Curtis Williams to two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole plus twenty (20) years in prison. The defendant had previously served ten years in prison after being convicted of kidnapping and aggravated assault in Bacon County. [Full Story »]

Shooting suspect caught in Florida

According to Appling County Sheriff reports at approximately 4:00 a.m. on June 21, deputies responded to Dubberly Road in Northern Appling County in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found the body of a Hispanic male identified as Matul Porfirio, age 25. A subsequent investigation by the Appling County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified the shooter as Jose Filo Gonzalez of 199 Gamble Road, Baxley. [Full Story »]

There were 45 subjects sentenced in Appling County Superior Court June 13 through June 22. Judge Amanda F. Williams sentenced the following people and their charges and sentences are listed below.
As reported above, Joseph Curtis Williams - jury verdict of guilty - rape - life without parole - kidnapping - life without parole consecutive with count one. Sheriff Benny DeLoach would like to report the following activity of the Appling County Sheriff’s Office.

June 19, answered a call to Surrson Street in reference to a fight. The victim stated that a fight had broken out and shots were fired. The deputies cleared the crowd and the group moved to the Huddle House. No other information was given. [Full Story »]

The Appling County Board of Commissioners held their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, June 21 at the Appling County Courthouse Annex beginning at 5:30 p.m. During the meeting the commissioners approved the purchase of a Georgia Easyvote System to be used by the registrars office. Eugene Walker resigns

Baxley City Councilman Eugene Walker gave his resignation at the regular city council meeting held June 14. City Manager Jeff Baxley read a resignation letter from Councilman Walker that stated due to health issues he would be resigning effective July 1. Councilman Walker has served 19 years and seven months as a councilman. The city charter states if the vacancy will be less than six months for a vacated position, the city does not have to hold a special election. The manager said that Councilman Walker would be formally recognized at the next regular meeting to be held June 29. [Full Story »]
