Eileen Carter Carson, 88, died Saturday, May 14, 2011 in the Pavilion. A native and lifelong resident of Appling County she was born Nov. 14, 1922 to the late David Robert Carter and the late Magdalene Fowler Carter. Eileen was a member of the First Baptist Church where she was a member of Queen Ester Sunday School Class. Mrs. Carson was owner and operator of Eileen’s Beauty Shop for more than 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, O. B. “Pete” Carson and two sisters, Hazel Reeves and Pauline Carter.

Ernest E. Crummey
Ernest E. Crummey, 81, died Thursday, May 19, 2011 in Dublin Fairview Park Hospital. Mr. Crummey was a lifelong resident of Appling County and was born March 26, 1930 to the late Willie Lee and Gladys White Crummey. He was a member of the Baxley Church of God. Mr. Crummey was a veteran of U.S. Army having served in the Korean Conflict.

Thomas Gregory Peterson, 51, died Friday, May 13, 2011 in Appling Healthcare System. Mr. Peterson was born April 17, 1960 in Duplin County, North Carolina, to the late George Thurston and Ellen Taylor Peterson. He was a member of Providence Baptist Church of Toombs County. Peterson was a member of NRA, Gideon’s International and was employed by Southern Company for 29 years where he had received numerous honors and awards.

Herschel V. “June” Sellers Jr., 93, of Lookout Mountain, a retired naval officer and UTC math professor, died on Tuesday, May 10, 2011. He was born in Baxley in 1917 and received degrees from the U.S. Naval Academy and Purdue University.

Marilyn Herndon Vance
Marilyn Herndon Vance, 84, of Baxley, and formerly of Atlanta, died May 14, 2011. Mrs. Vance was a member of North Avenue Presbyterian Church in Atlanta and attended the Friendship Sunday School Class in Baxley. She was an active member of DAR, the National Garden Club, Capital City Club, and the Atlanta Women’s Club.

Anthony Jerome Clark
Anthony Jerome Clark, 52, a native of Washington, D.C. and resident of Jesup, passed away on Monday, May 9, 2011 at Wayne Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born on July 21, 1958 to the late James R. Clark and Alberta Edmondson-Clark. Affectionately known as “Lard” and “Cool Breeze”, Anthony was a delight to his family and friends. He attended the public schools of Washington, D.C. and graduated from McKinley Tech Senior High School, after which he served honorably in the U.S. Army and he was a former employee of Liberty County Sheriff Department where he worked as a jailer until his health began to fail.

James Alfonso Hendrix, Jr., 57, of Jesup, died Friday, May 6, 2011 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Jesup. James was born May 19, 1953 in Dade County to Mary Jane Hamker Hendrix and the late James Alfonso Hendrix, Sr. He was a member of Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church. He had previously attended the Appling County Sunshine Center and has been a resident of Wayne County for the past 15 years.

Samuel “Jimmy” Carter, Jr.
Samuel “Jimmy” Carter, Jr., 68, of Toombs County, Lyons, died Saturday, April 30, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Carter was born May 24, 1942 in Appling County to the late Sam Wiley Carter, Sr. and the late Alla Mae Herrin Carter. He was a member of Satilla Freewill Baptist Church in Hazlehurst. Jimmy was in the United States Air Force and served as an Aircraft Jet Engine Mechanic. He was retired as a senior sawmill supervisor for New South Inc. in Cassatt, S.C. and was a member of Miliken’s Creek Masonic Lodge #302 F&AM in Cedar Crossing. Jimmy was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Carter.

Doris Waters
Doris Waters, 77, of Bloomingdale, died peacefully early Friday, May 6, 2011 after a long illness. She was born in Baxley to the late Elizabeth and Maxie Doyle Evans, July 18, 1933. She was one of seven children. Doris moved to Savannah in 1953 and was the mother of three children and three stepchildren. She was a lover of nature: with a special affinity for birds, dogs, butterflies and dragonflies.

Millard Jon Lott, 73, died Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Lott was born Aug. 26, 1937 in Irwin County and had lived in Jacksonville, FL until moving to Alma. He was self-employed as a farm equipment salesman with Lott Tractor Company and a member of Beulah Baptist Church. Millard was the son of the late George W. and Margie Bell Gurley Lott. He was preceded in death by his sister, Clyde Craven and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Olen and Novana Lamb.

Harry Emmett McMillan
Harry Emmett McMillan, 85, lovingly known as “Mac” by all who knew him, died Wednesday, April 27, 2011 in Tattnall Nursing Center in Reidsville after an extended illness. Mac was an avid fisherman and loved living at Eason’s Bluff on the Altamaha River after retiring from Southern Bell Telephone Company with 37 years of dedicated service, retiring as local manager. He was in the U.S. Marine Corps, a veteran of World War II having served at Iwo-Jima, the occupation of Japan and the Volcano Islands.

Bertie Jean Butler Poole
Bertie Jean Butler Poole, 77, entered into rest Monday, April 25, 2011 at Select Specialty Hospital. A memorial service was held on Saturday, April 30 at 2:00 p.m. at Fleming Baptist Church with the Reverend Billy Atkins officiating. Interment will be private at a later date. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Oliver and Eugene Butler and her sister, Betty Faye Carter.
