Nail signs National Letter of Intent
On May 12, Brooke Nail signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball for the Columbus State University Lady Cougars. Coach Brad Huskisson has recruited Brooke to play third base and do some pitching for the Lady Cougars, a team that ended the 2011 season with a 37-16 record and finishing as the number three seed. Columbus State University is in the Peach Belt Conference of NCAA D II.

Appling Christian Lady Eagles named State Champs
The Appling Christian Academy softball team traveled to Valdosta for a best two-out-of three series. Their opponent was the Peoples Baptist Knights of McDonough. In game one, the Lady Eagles came out slugging and posted four runs in the top of the first. In the bottom of the first inning, the Lady Knights answered with two runs of their own, making the score 4-2. The next five innings turned into a pitching duel, with neither team scoring a single run. With the game still in doubt and the Lady Eagles holding a slim two run lead, the Lady Eagles were able to score an insurance run in the top of the seventh to take a 5-2 lead. From there, pitcher Lindsey Johnson would close the door on the Lady Knights and secure the win in game one.

ACHS 4x100 team best in state
The Appling County Pirates Boys track team 4x100-meter relay team was the State 2AA Champions with a time of 42:15 at the recent State Track Competition in Jefferson. The boys team placed sixth overall with 26 total points.

The South Georgia Sluggers went to Brunswick Saturday May 7 to play the “12-Under NSA Mother’s Day Match-up” tournament at the North Glynn Recreation Complex.

Pirates advance to final four
(Editor’s note: The Pirates traveled to Buford on Monday to face the Wolves in the semi finals. As of presstime, the Pirates lost to Buford late Monday and were eliminated from the playoffs. However, the community is very proud of the efforts of the players, coaches and supporters for all their hard work during this historic season. Congratulations to you all.)

They earned their way there by defeating Region 8AA Champion, the Hart County Bulldogs in a best-of-three series in Hartwell. The Pirates traveled to Eastman Tuesday afternoon to play region 3AA’s #1 seeded Dodge County Indians. The games would live up to their billing. Two good baseball teams would battle it out to the end. After 14 tough innings of baseball the Pirates move on to the elite eight. The Pirates swept the Indians in the best of three series two games to none. The Pirates won the first game 3-2 and they took the late game 8-6. [Full Story »]

Pirates Sweep Doubleheader over Crawford County

Summer track and field program offered
J.L.S. Young Achievers-Impala T. C. of South GA will be providing runners and fielders the opportunity to participate in summer track and field. Parents if your athlete is between 8-19, then they are eligible to participate in this program. Our club/participants will be competing in several AAU and USATF sponsored meets over the next couple of months. Example meet locales are expected to be in Atlanta, Augusta, Orlando, Tampa and ultimately New Orleans, the site of this year’s Junior Olympics.

The Appling County Pirates hosted the last regular season home game of the season Monday night against the Brantley County Herons. The game had huge playoff implications. The winner would still have the chance to host the first round of the state playoffs by capturing the number two seed in region 2AA. The loser could slip all the way to fourth spot. The Pirates took care of business and took the game 15-2 by the way of the mercy run rule in five innings. [Full Story »]

Appling Christian Eagles Advance in the Playoffs
This past weekend the ACA baseball team won two of three games against the Barnes Academy Vikings. The Eagles dropped game one by a five to four score. The Eagles failed to score in the first inning but gave up the only earned run the Vikings would manage in the game. In the second inning two errors by the Eagles coupled with three walks would net the Vikings four more runs.

Registration for pool activities
The Appling County Recreation Department announces there will be a registration held for pool activities for swim lessons, swim team and pool parties at Max Deen City Pool beginning Monday, May 2 and Friday, May 13 at 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
