Deodus Simpson, Jr.
Deodus Simpson, Jr. died Wednesday, April 6, 2011. Deodus Jr. was born in Baxley, Appling County on Nov. 27, 1949 to the late Deodus Simpson Sr. and Ruthie Mae Brown Simpson. Mr. Simpson received the Lord Jesus Christ as his savior at an early age at the Saint James A.M.E. Church of Baxley. He graduated from Appling County Consolidated High School in 1968. Mr. Simpson was a kind, gentle, loving and honest person to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by all.

Edith Watson, 81, of Jacksonville, Florida, died Monday, April 11, 2011 at her residence. Mrs. Watson was born Feb. 19, 1930 in Appling County where she had resided until moving to Jacksonville, FL. She was a homemaker and a member of Northside Church of God in Jacksonville, FL. Edith was the daughter of the late William Lamb and the late Mildred Roberson Lamb. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Watson, sister, Erma O. Cain, brother, Carl Lamb and grandson, David Rook.

Leona Byrd Carter
Leona Byrd Carter, 86, of Bristol, died Friday, April 8, 2011, at her residence after an extended illness. The Appling County native was a member of the Antioch Congregational Christian Church in Bristol, where she served in many capacities, was an Adult Sunday-School Teacher for many years, and was a lifelong farmer. She was a retired director of Autumn Place Service Center in Jesup, former member of the Dogwood Garden Club and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was predeceased by her husband: Carl Russell Carter, Sr., brothers: G. W. Byrd, Rupert Byrd, Devon Byrd, John Byrd, and a sister: Essie Mae Byrd Barnes.

Lottie Mae Dyal Johnson, 79, died Wednesday, March 30, 2011 in the Appling Healthcare System. Lottie Mae was born in Appling County to the late Albert and Gussie Carter Dyal October 11, 1931 and had resided here all of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Midway Baptist Church. Eddie F. Solomon, Sr.
Eddie F. Solomon, Sr. died Friday, April 1, 2011 at Appling Healthcare System. Mr. Solomon was born March 3, 1942 in Baxley. He was the son of the late William and Ora Rayner Solomon. In his early childhood his mother who was a missionary raised him in holiness. Eddie attended Appling County Public School in Baxley. He was employed with Natural Gas and also drove the Appling County School bus for a long time. Mr. Solomon was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Ellen Solomon (Red) and six siblings.

Orvil “Tennie” Barnes, 70, died Friday, March 25, 2011 in Appling HealthCare System. Mr. Barnes was a native and life long resident of Appling County, he was born Nov. 24, 1940 to the late William Jake Barnes and Effie Mae Murphy Barnes. Tennie attended Baxley Church of God. He was retired from Iron Worker Local 709.

Gail Woods Williams Taylor
Gail Woods Williams Taylor, 55, of Hazlehurst, died Monday, March 28, 2011. Gail was born in Toombs County, but had lived most of her life in Jeff Davis County. She was the daughter of the late Willie and Vera Mae Trull Woods. Mrs. Taylor was a LPN and was formerly employed by Dr. Ferrari, Dr. Teresa Cezar, Appling HealthCare and Sunbridge Nursing Home. She was a member of the Local Painters Union 1169. Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her husband, Todd Taylor; son, Garrett Williams and siblings, Faye Woods Wilson, Jerry Woods, Doris Woods Rice and Teddy Woods.

Raymond Watson
Raymond Watson, 84, of Jacksonville, Florida, died Sunday, March 27, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Watson was born Sept. 13, 1926 in Appling County where he had resided until moving to Jacksonville, FL. He was a U.S. Army veteran and had served in WWII and was employed as a truck driver with Ryder Trucking for 41 years before retiring. Raymond was a member of Northside Church of God in Jacksonville, FL. Mr. Watson was the son of the late Henry Jess and Alma Hyers Watson. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jessie Lee Youngblood and a grandson, David Rook.
