Architect Larry Pope, of SP Design Group, and Dr. Mickey Schuber, facilities consultant for Southeast Georgia (Georgia Department of Education), spoke to Appling County Board of Education members on Thursday, April 21 during the board’s monthly work session meeting. Pope talked to the board about the renovations to the school that SP Design is recommending. He noted various problems at the school that include little or no insulation throughout the facility, window walls that are not energy efficient, handicap accessibility, bathroom facilities are outdated, the roof needs to be replaced, lighting fixtures, flooring and painting. Buxton selected to Under Armour All-America Game

Under Armour and Baseball Factory would like to congratulate Byron Buxton of Baxley, on his selection to the 2011 Under Armour All-America Baseball Game, powered by Baseball Factory. Held at historic Wrigley Field in Chicago, the game features the most talented high school players from across the country. ACA Eagles complete region play with two wins

The Appling Christian Eagles completed Region play this week with a pair of wins. On Friday in Valdosta the Eagles won 18 to 2 over the Open Bible Christian Warriors. The offense came early and often for the Eagles with four runs scored in the first inning of play. The Warriors would score their only two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Eagles plated three more runs in the second inning. Appling went quietly in the third but erupted for eleven runs in the fourth and final inning of play. [Full Story »] 

Woman viciously attacked at park

According to a Baxley Police incident report, a 29-year-old Baxley woman was attacked at the Baxley Water Works Park located between Park Avenue and Tippins Street on Tuesday, April 19 at approximately 8:30 p.m. The woman was walking at the park for physical exercise. [Full Story »]

It looks as if Baxley and Appling County will finally have a recycling program, at least for paper products. In case you missed the article on this week’s front page one young lady in the community, Tierra Lewis, recognized that our community needed to get a recycling program started and worked to get the ball rolling. Tierra, along with the Girl Scouts, now have a paper recycling program operating within county schools. Thank you Tierra. [Full Story »]
