The Appling County Commissioners held two called meetings last week on Tuesday, March 22 and Wednesday, March 23 in conjunction with the Appling County Recreation Authority. During the course of this two-day marathon of meetings, a number of closed-door sessions were held to discuss personnel and litigation associated with the Appling County Recreation Department. Principal Brenda R. Harvey and the Appling County Primary School faculty and staff would like to introduce the 2011 Miss Primateer and her court. Mayor Steve Rigdon proclaims Friday, April 8 as the official Baxley Tree Fest T-shirt Day at the regular city council meeting held March 22. Karen Glenn came before the city council with the request to make the official Tree Fest T-shirt Day April 8. Following the mayor’s proclamation Glenn presented t-shirts to the council members and thanked the council for their support. [Full Story »] 

Come one, come all to this year’s Baxley Idol singing competition. The event will be held at the Appling County Fine Arts Center on April 5 and 7 from 6:30-9:00 p.m. The competition for ages five through 14 will be held on April 5 and ages 15 and up and Group competition will be held on April 7. The group competition has been added this year in order to accommodate all of Appling County’s extraordinary duos, trios, etc. [Full Story »]

The annual staff of Appling County High School would like to invite everyone to come out on April 2 for the 43rd Annual Miss Pirate Pageant. 2010 Miss Pirate, Brooke Nail, will be crowning our new 2011 Miss Pirate. Sheriff Benny DeLoach would like to report the following activity of the Appling County Sheriff’s Office.

March 18, answered a call to JR Harper Road in reference to damage to property. A complainant stated that someone lost control of their vehicle and ran through the fence into his pasture. [Full Story »]

There seemed to be uncertainty among Appling County Board of Education members at their regular monthly meeting held on March 14. The uncertainty was a result of a question raised by Board Member Randy Crawford as to whether or not the school system still had a hiring freeze in place. Crawford stated he had a received a number of comments from citizens about that question and stated that it was his understanding that once the present budget was in place, the freeze ceased to exist. Board Member M.C. Barlow stated to Crawford that the freeze could still be in force. Crawford replied that if that was the case, the prior and existing board had opened and hired several positions.
