Dear Editor,

My compliments to the Appling Hospital. I was recently hospitalized overnight for observation and testing because of chest pains. While at the hospital, I was impressed with the level of care the employees provided at our local hospital. Thanks to Darrel Taylor’s daughter for an almost painless IV start. [Full Story »]

Showing a picture of a young man walking on legs three times too fat, the news programs spotlight the problem. Charleston, SC is a fun city; it is a historic city. I can trace my family’s roots there from the present to colonial times. I had ancestors living there at the time of the great Charleston Earthquake in 1886. The historicity of Charleston makes it an enchanting place and the charming restaurants, especially on the waterfront, make for fundelicious cuisine. All of this combined with night-lights, fantasia and warm, exciting bodies make Charleston a romantic city, too. [Full Story »]

Pirates come up short against Pierce County

The Appling County Pirates basketball team hosted the Pierce County Bears on Friday, February 4. The Pirates came up just a little short losing 41-49. The two region 2AA games between both teams have been decided by a total of ten points with Pierce County winning 58-60 in overtime on January 28. [Full Story »]

Susie Jemima Butler, 89, died Monday, January 31, 2011 in Appling Healthcare System. Susie was a native and lifelong resident of Appling County and was born Sept. 6, 1921 to the late John Perry Beck and the late Laura Bell Bacon Beck. She was a member of Bethel Freewill Baptist Church. Mrs. Butler was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett Joel Butler, Sr., a son, James Butler and three brothers, J. P., Gene and Ozzie Beck. Joseph L. “Short” Crosby, 89, died Wednesday, February 2, 2011 in Carl Vinson Medical Center in Dublin. Mr. Crosby was a native and lifelong resident of Appling County and was born Feb. 1, 1922 to the late Lyman and Minnie Carter Crosby. He was a member of Satilla Baptist Church. Short was a World War II U.S. Army survivor – POW. He was a farmer until the age 89 and an avid gardener. Short liked growing in which he enjoyed giving away and loved his roses. Mr. Crosby was preceded in death by his wife, Marcell Crosby and a granddaughter, Tina R. Crosby. [Full Story »]

Mr. Eason was born Nov. 2, 1929 in Appling County to the late Hansel Lee Eason and the late Charity Martin Eason. He was a veteran of the United States Army and Air Force. Oak Ridge community hit hard by burglars

According to Police Chief James Godfrey members of the Baxley Police Department were kept busy answering calls of unknown persons entering automobiles in the Oak Ridge subdivision. The calls started coming in around 2:23 a.m. in the morning of February 2 and kept coming most of the day. The following are incidents that were handled by officers of the police department. County officials informed of closures

The Appling County Board of Commissioners held their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, February 1 at the Appling County Courthouse Annex. During the meeting the commissioners were informed by County Manager Lee Lewis of the closing of the PET Processing Plant located on Red Oak Road on March 31. Lewis also informed the commissioners of the closing of the bridge on Zoar Road effective February 2. Lewis stated he would be contacting the Georgia Department of Transportation who has been planning to replace the bridge. [Full Story »] 

Appling Deputies have busy week

According to Appling County Sheriff Benny Deloach, on February 2 thirty-three vehicles located in the city and county were entered into. Items were stolen from some of the vehicles and also some were damaged by trying to pry into them. Warrants have been secured on Phillip Laquan Johnson, age 19, of Waycross. Investigation indicated more people are involved in the burglaries. Appling County Investigators are working closely with Ware County, Pierce County and Charlton County with similar incidents. Plant to be shuttered by the end of March

According to Dean Foods Company representative Liliana Esposito, last week Dean Foods Company announced that it would close its Baxley processing plant and move production to other facilities in its national network. Production at the facility, which supports the company’s PET Dairy brand, will be phased out over the next two months, with final closure expected by the end of March. [Full Story »]
