Joseph L. “Short” Crosby
Joseph L. “Short” Crosby, 89, died Wednesday, February 2, 2011 in Carl Vinson Medical Center in Dublin. Mr. Crosby was a native and lifelong resident of Appling County and was born Feb. 1, 1922 to the late Lyman and Minnie Carter Crosby. He was a member of Satilla Baptist Church. Short was a World War II U.S. Army survivor – POW. He was a farmer until the age 89 and an avid gardener. Short liked growing in which he enjoyed giving away and loved his roses. Mr. Crosby was preceded in death by his wife, Marcell Crosby and a granddaughter, Tina R. Crosby.

Vernice L. “Mann” Eason, Sr.
Vernice L. “Mann” Eason, Sr., 81, died Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital in Savannah. Mr. Eason was born Nov. 2, 1929 in Appling County to the late Hansel Lee Eason and the late Charity Martin Eason. He was a veteran of the United States Army and Air Force. Mr. Eason was a Pentecostal minister and was preceded in death by a son, Vernice L. Eason, Jr.

Barbara “Barbie” Stallings Griffin
Barbara “Barbie” Stallings Griffin, 32, died Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Community Hospice in Vidalia. She was born to Linda and Curtis Stallings in Appling County on August 16, 1978 and had resided here all of her life. Barbie was a homemaker and attended Sand Hill Creek Baptist Church.

Kenneth Daniel Robertson, Sr., 66, died Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Robertson was a native of Miami, Florida and was born July 24, 1944 to the late Austin Cumbee Robertson and the late Anna Mae Carey Robertson. He was a member of Friendship Congregational Christian Church. Mr. Robertson was a member of the C.B. Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Natha Robertson.

Hazel Alderman Williams, died Friday, January 28, 2011. Hazel was affectionately known as “Grandma” and was born Feb. 15, 1924 in Surrency, and was one of 12 children born to the union of the late Robert and Vinia Neville-Alderman.

James Albert “Jimmy” Baker, 63, died Sunday, January 16, 2011 in Carl Vinson Medical Center in Dublin. Mr. Baker was a native of Appling County and was born Oct. 10, 1947. He was a member of Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church. Jimmy was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Vietnam War. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Grady Baker, Sr., a sister, Ann Baker Curry; a brother-in-law, Eddie Branch and nephews, Rick Baker and Steve Branch.

Ruthie Mae Paulk Barber
Ruthie Mae Paulk Barber, 79, of Baxley, died Thursday, December 30, 2010, in the Altamaha Healthcare Center after an extended illness. The Appling County native was a member of the Zion Church of God and a homemaker. She was the widow of James Barber and was predeceased by her parents: E. V. and Nellie Storey Paulk, sister: Evelyn Taylor, and two brothers: Alvin Paulk and Pete Paulk.

Sherri L. Branch, 54, died Sunday, January 23, 2011 at her residence. Sherri was born in Appling County on Sept. 19, 1956 and had resided here all of her life. She was a retired seamstress and was employed with Douglas-Harper Manufacturing before her retirement. Sherri was a member of Bethel Freewill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kami Branch and her father, Clifford Johnson.

Day and the late Beulah Day and had resided in Baxley for the past nine years. She was retired and had been employed as a waitress before her retirement. Ms. Hutto was of the Baptist Faith.

John B. Johnson, Sr., 77, died Friday, January 28, 2011 in Bacon County Hospital. John was a native and life long resident of Appling County and was born Nov. 12, 1933 to the late Aaron Barry and Vicie Leola Murphy Johnson. He was a member of Big Oaks Church of God. Mr. Johnson was a retired Navy veteran of 21 years having served in Vietnam. He was a member of Vietnam Vets of America. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Johnson.

Ruby O’Berry Morris, 77, of Surrency, died Thursday, January 20, 2011 at the Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross. Mrs. Morris was a native and lifelong resident of Appling County and she was born Dec. 4, 1933 to the late Marshall Gordon and Mary Dykes O’Berry. She was a member of Ephesus Church of God. Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Lee Morris, two sisters, Lula Smith and Nell O’Berry, two brothers, Ben and Ermond O’Berry, a grandchild, Amber Elizabeth Thomas and a great-grandchild, Devin Shaye Calhoun.

Wendell Clint Quinn, 33, died Tuesday, January 25, 2011. Mr. Quinn was a native and lifelong resident of Appling County and was born Oct. 10, 1977. He was a member of Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Quinn was an accomplished electrician. He was an avid fisherman, football fan, racing fan and loved spending time with friends and family. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Bill and Thelma Tillman and paternal grandmother, Minnie Quinn.

Mary Ann Vaughn, 69, died Tuesday, January 25, 2011 in Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick. Mary Ann was a native of Lowndes County and was born May 3, 1941 to the late Oliver Columbus and Berta Mae Yates Foskey. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she attended the Ruth Sunday-School Class and the Joy Group. Ms. Vaughn was preceded in death by her husband, Cadwell Vaughn.
