Congressman Jack Kingston and national Republicans campaigned last year on cutting federal spending and lowering the debt, which they said was the best way to improve the economy. The voters overwhelmingly agreed with Congressman Kingston and the national Republican platform to cut spending and lower taxes. [Full Story »] 

A few months ago, there appeared in our yard a new stray dog, the most recent of a long line of strays. Neither Larry nor I could ever adhere to the policy of “don’t feed him and he’ll go away.” We can’t bear to see an animal hungry. We fed him, and he stayed. In the meantime, we tried really hard to find him a home. I tried to give him to all my students, and several wanted him. Getting all those unreasonable parents to agree was the problem. In the meantime he frolicked with Bentley and played with the cats. He grew round and healthy. [Full Story »]

Betty Dean Sellers Beck, 81, died Friday, January 7, 2011 at her residence. Betty was born to the late Issac and Pearl Deen Sellers in Appling County and had lived here most of her life. She was retired and has been employed by King Edward Cigar Company of Jacksonville, FL and Ship and Shore Manufactory of Baxley before her retirement. She was a member of Consolation Baptist Church. Mrs. Beck was preceded in death by her husband, A. E. (Gene) Beck, a sister, Cornellia Roberson and three brothers, Cecil, Wilton and Gerald Sellers. [Full Story »]
