Not much change
When the opportunity came a few years ago to travel to Nebraska on a National Writing Project trip to collaborate with other writing teachers across the country, I was thrilled. I had no idea what to expect, but I learned that Nebraskans constantly watch the sky for bad weather. They always fear being swept away by tornados that spring up without warning. I remember that few trees grow there, just tall grasses that stretch for miles. Above all else, I remember a writing visit to a small white church on the plain. The story of the church and the people buried in its cemetery haunts me to this day.

The subtlety of temptation
“You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. - Genesis 3:4-6 [Full Story »]

“Keep a close eye on him”
Dear Editor,
Every now and then, a young person is bitten with the bug that draws them to politics. I speak from experience, because many years ago, I was one of those young people. [Full Story »]

Do I have your cat?
A few months ago, there appeared in our yard a new stray dog, the most recent of a long line of strays. Neither Larry nor I could ever adhere to the policy of “don’t feed him and he’ll go away.” We can’t bear to see an animal hungry. We fed him, and he stayed. In the meantime, we tried really hard to find him a home. I tried to give him to all my students, and several wanted him. Getting all those unreasonable parents to agree was the problem. In the meantime he frolicked with Bentley and played with the cats. He grew round and healthy.

Celebrating the New Year in Charleston
It is a rainy, gloomy day on St. Simons. B. J. and I are warm and cozy in our island cottage and I’m writing while she concocts some “rainy day” soup.

Did you notice an increase?
In case you noticed an increase in your power bill in January from Georgia Power Company, the increase is in part due to a rate increase proposed by the company and then approved by the elected members of the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) last month. On December 21, 2010 the PSC approved one of the largest rate hikes in Georgia Power’s history.

Who did you bless this Christmas?
Dear Editor and citizens,
Did you bless anyone this holiday season? Share a meal? Say a prayer? Give thanks for your neighbors, friends, just say hello or show any love? Christ is all about love because God is love. The word says in John 3:16 of the Bible that God gave His only Son that we might live. [Full Story »]

Train up a child
By Mary Ann Ellis
Rearing a child could very well be the most important and the most daunting of all our tasks on this earth. The dilemmas begin well before we bring a child home from the hospital and are more intense than finding a name for our newest family member, even though that is important. [Full Story »]
