Clerk foils armed robbery
Chief James Godfrey reports that on Dec. 2, at approximately 8:42 p.m., Baxley Police Officers answered a call to the Discount Corner Store in reference to a hold up alarm. On arrival the clerk told officers that a white male subject entered the store, came behind the counter displaying a small pistol and demanded money. The clerk was able to knock the pistol out of the robber’s hand. The robber then fled the store on foot. A lookout was posted to other units and surrounding counties with a description of the subject and a possible vehicle. Investigation led to the identity of the robber and after an investigation, Brian David Spell, 28, of Baxley, was arrested on one count of armed robbery. Further investigation led to the arrest of Chase Van Sharpe, 20, also of Baxley, on charges of one count armed robbery.
The following are highlights of incidents that were handled by officers of the Baxley Police Department over the past few weeks.
Dec. 2, at approximately 4:24 p.m., met with a complainant at Keith Morris Law Office in reference to a burglary. On arrival the complainant told officers that sometime during the night person(s) unknown had broke into the business and removed an undetermined amount of U.S. currency.
Dec. 4, at approx. 8:51 p.m., stopped a vehicle for a tag light violation. As a result of the stop and a check on the driver’s license, showed the driver’s license to be suspended. After a pat down of the driver, a small amount of cocaine was seized. Arrested in connection with this incident was Chadrick Antonio Davis, 28, of Baxley, on charges of one count each of tag light violation, driving on suspended driver’s license and V.G.C.S.A. possession of a controlled substance.
Dec. 5, at approx. 8:36 a.m., met with a complainant at an East Parker Street address in reference to a theft. On arrival the complainant told officers that person(s) unknown had stole his 3800-watt, 6.5, red in color generator, sometime during the night. Investigation led to the arrest of Robert Wheeler, 40, of Baxley, on charges of one count theft by taking.
Dec. 6, at approx. 4:40 p.m., answered a call to G&S Auto Sales in reference to a theft. On arrival the complainant told officers that sometime during the night person(s) unknown had climbed over the fence and removed the tires and rims off of a 2005 Chevrolet Impala, 4-door, along with damaging the door and the lock, and damaging the dash of the vehicle while removing the CD player and a set of speakers that were inside a box.
Dec. 8, at approx. 4:54 p.m., met with a resident at a Holmesville Avenue address in reference to a burglary. On arrival the resident told officers that while she was gone, person(s) unknown broke into her home and removed a black Play Station game and an undetermined amount of change.
Dec. 8, at approx. 7:00 a.m., met with a complainant at Foster Rowland’s Car Sales in reference to a theft. On arrival the complainant told officers that sometime during the night person(s) unknown had removed a 5-ton heating and air conditioning unit, which was outside of the business.
Dec. 9, at approx. 12:12 met with a complainant at Sun Trust Bank in reference to a forgery and theft. On arrival the officers met with the complainant who stated that a subject had forged and cashed a check that didn’t belong to her. She did not have permission from the check owner to cash it. The check was in the amount of $13,175.72. Warrants have been issued for Villa Cheryl Roberson, 51, of Glenwood, on charges of one count each of theft by deception and forgery in the first degree. Roberson has been entered on the GCIC computer network as wanted. Anyone knowing her whereabouts is urged to contact the nearest law enforcement agency.
Dec. 9, at approx. 7:20 p.m., met with a resident at a Tippins Street address in reference to a burglary. On arrival the resident told officers that while she was gone, person(s) unknown broke into her home and removed an undetermined amount of change.
Dec. 12, at approx. 9:06 a.m., met with a resident at a Johnson Street address in reference to a theft. On arrival the resident told officers that sometime during the night person(s) unknown had removed her son’s four-wheeler from the carport area. The four-wheeler is described as red in color, a 2008, 750 Kawasaki Brute, and had a serial number of JKAVFDD138B5062. The four-wheeler has been entered into the GCIC computer network as stolen.
Dec. 13, at approx. 4:45 p.m., answered a call to Wal-Mart in reference to a theft. On arrival the officers met with the LPC officer whom had a subject detained for taking some merchandise without paying for it. Arrested in connection with this incident was Thomas A. Murray, 41, of Odum, on charges of one count each of public intoxication, and theft by shoplifting.
Dec. 13, at approx. 5:21 p.m., met with the resident at a Luckie Street address in reference to a theft. On arrival the resident told officers that person(s) unknown removed a window air conditioner in order to enter his home, and once inside removed a Wii player, two remotes, some cash, gold bracelets, rings and a watch. Also reported missing was a debit card and several checks.
Dec. 17, at approx. 4:23 p.m., a complaint was filed with the officers of the police department, about incidents involving acts of sexual misconduct that have and were happening, which involved a 7-year-old female. An investigation was conducted, which included officers of the police department, the G.B.I., members of the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services, along with a forensic interview being done. As a result of the investigation, Paul Miller, 46, of Baxley, was arrested on one count of cruelty to children, rape, and pimping and child molestation.
Dec. 19, at approx. 3:50 a.m., met with a resident at a Cadillac Drive address in reference to an armed robbery. On arrival the officers met with the resident who told them he was home and heard a noise outside, when he looked out the door he was confronted with several subjects, who shoved a gun in his face and forced their way into his home. He said they made him lie down on the floor where they tied him up and beat him with a gun. The resident also said they made another person who was at the house lie down, where they tied him up and beat him also. The subjects then took an undetermined amount of currency, an Xbox 360 game, a 12-gauge Remington shotgun, a 308 s/s/m rifle, a 22-calibur Marlin rifle, a 20-guage Remington shotgun, a 12-guage Benelli shotgun and a 30-06 Remington rifle and then left. The resident said he waited approximately 20 minutes to make sure they were gone before he got up to call 911.
