New business
Councilman Mickey Bass made a motion to table Item A under new business until the Appling County Commissioners have had a chance to consider a request from Sidney Wildes and Forrest Wildes that would amend the Joint Appling County Solid Waste Management Plan 2018. This motion was seconded by Councilman Tim Varnadore and was approved unanimously.
Dr. Hall made a motion for City Manager Baxley and City Attorney Alex Johnson to pursue recertifying the City of Baxley as a Georgia Certified City of Ethics.
The council reappointed Charlie Stuckey for another four-year term on the Appling County Library Board (12-31-11 to 12-31-15), and appointed Lula Cox for a four-year term, to replace Danita Hayes, (who respectfully declined to be reappointed), for a term of 12-31-11 to 12/31-15.
A public hearing date was set for Jan. 10 at 6:00 p.m. for a petition for annexation filed by Bonnie R. Beecher, to annex her property located at 473 Palmetto Circle and establishing a residential (R-20) zone.
Councilman Varnadore thanked everyone for their phone calls, prayers and concern during his hospital visit.
City manager report
Manager Jeff Baxley reported that Winter Wonderland went very well and everyone did a great job. He recognized Cristin Floyd, David Gore, and the Public Works Department, Shane Crosby, Chief Godfrey, the Baxley Police Department, Baxley Fire Department employees and City Hall office staff, and all the volunteers who helped with this event.
Baxley reminded everyone that the next regular meeting would be held Thursday, Dec. 22, due to the Christmas holidays.
The manager stated that city employees maintain the downtown area and City Hall and everything is really looking good and being well kept.
He also reported that Phase III of the CDBG project has begun with work on Mauldin and Jones Streets.
The manager stated the construction of the terminal building at the Baxley Airport is going really well.
He reminded everyone of the city’s Christmas luncheon that would be held Friday, Dec. 23 at First Baptist Church Social Hall.
The manager also announced that Christmas in the Park would be held Dec. 14 at 6:00 p.m.
Mayor Steve Rigdon announced that he attended the GMA Ninth District Fall meeting in Lyons.
