The Appling County Board of Commissioners held their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, December 6 at the Appling County Courthouse Annex beginning at 5:30 p.m. During the meeting Alex Johnson and Sydney Wildes shared information about the need of a change to the current Solid Waste Plan in order to be able to install another waste management plant in Appling County. The current plan only allows for one such plant. The new plant is to be built between Highway 121 and Highway 15 outside of Surrency. The plant is projected to bring 20 jobs to the community when opened and around 150 to 200 jobs by the third to fifth year. The plant would have a small landfill and would recycle 60 to 70 percent of waste collected. No action was taken due to all members of the commission not being present at the meeting.

Sealed bids were opened for the purchase of two Sheriff Department vehicles with bids from Woody Folsom Ford for a total cost of $42,678.00 and Brannen Motor Company for a total cost of $46,556.00 for Ford and $50,820.00 for Chevrolet. A motion was made by Commissioner Sarah Boatright to accept the best and lowest bid after inspection by Sheriff Benny DeLoach, with a second by Commissioner Charlie Leggett. The motion was approved unanimously.
Information was shared to the Commissioners by County Manager Lee Lewis about the need to purchase new power units and tools that are used with the “Jaws of Life” by the Appling County EMA. The old equipment recently failed and the backup was used. One set of the equipment is over 15 years old with the other set over 30 years old. The cost to upgrade all the equipment is $19,742.56 and would have to be purchased by money out of contingency due to not being a budgeted item. A motion was made by Boatright, with a second by Commissioner Jasper Tomberlin, to purchase the equipment. The motion was approved by all commissioners in attendance.
Paula Tanner was appointed to the Altamaha River Partnership Board.
Information was shared that the Zoar Road Bridge is projected to be complete by the end of December and work on Hill Top Road has been completed.
