The following are highlights of incidents that were handled by officers of the Baxley Police Department over the past few weeks.
Nov. 12 at approx. 2:11 p.m., answered a call to Wal-Mart in reference to a theft. On arrival officers met with the LPC officer who told them that they had discovered several cameras and GPS-Garmins missing from a counter in the electronics department of the store. Upon checking the surveillance footage it showed two black males removing the items from their cartons and placing the items inside their clothes and walking out without paying for them.

Nov. 16 at approx. 2:37 p.m., answered a call to the Appling County High School in reference to a parent refusing to leave the school. On arrival the officers met with the principal who told them he had met with a parent over a school policy issue and she became rude and disrespectful toward him, and he had asked her to leave the school at which she refused and he wanted her removed. Officers then approached the parent and explained the principal’s request for her to leave, at which time she refused and became rude and disrespectful to the officers. After several attempts to defuse the situation, the parent and another person had to be restrained and removed from the school. Arrested in connection with this incident was Veronica Baltimore, 40, and Delorise Marie Parker, 65, both of Baxley, on charges of one count each of criminal trespass and obstruction of an officer.
Nov. 17 at approx. 3:40 a.m., answered a call to Wal-Mart in reference to a theft. On arrival the officers met with several workers who told them they had detained several subjects who had left the store with buggies full of items without paying for them, saying they were looking for a lost child. Investigation revealed there was no lost child and the following were charged in connection with the incident. Arrested was Latoya Rene Peeples, 22, of Soperton, on charges of one count each of theft by shoplifting and false report of a crime, Felicia Montgomery, 28 of Dublin, on charges of one count theft by shoplifting, Whitney Chevonne Clark, 24, of Soperton, on charges of one count theft by shoplifting and Lakeisha Michelle Miller, 22, of Soperton, on charges of one count theft by shoplifting.
Nov. 18 at approx. 1:42 p.m., answered a call to the Dollar General Store in reference to a theft. On arrival the officers met with the complainant who told them that she was in the store and when she left she was followed to her vehicle by two black females who insisted on helping her into her car, during which time one of them grabbed her purse, but the lady was able to get it back. The two females then fled on foot from the scene. The complainant told officers after they had left she noticed her pocketbook was opened and an envelope that contained her money was missing. After officers checked with the clerks and got a description of the females a lookout was put out for the two females. In just a short period of time, both of the females were located. Investigation led to the arrest of Jazmin Williams, 25, of Hazlehurst, and Sharlene Heller, 28, of Baxley, on charges of one count each of robbery.
Nov. 20 at approx. 4:11 p.m., met with the resident of an apartment no. 501 in Speer Homes in Baxley in reference to a theft. On arrival the resident told officers that person(s) unknown had removed her son’s bike from her property. The bike is described as a boy’s 20-inch bike and was spray-painted black, along with black rims.
Nov. 22 at approx. 10:06 p.m., answered a call to apartment no. 11 located on Kenny Lane in reference to a domestic argument. On arrival the officers discovered that an argument over a custody issue had turned into a physical assault. Investigation led to the arrest of Lasonya Ann Carter, 23, of 612 Speer Homes and Tony Lorenzo Bentley, 24, of apartment no. 9 of Brown Homes on charges of one count each of simple battery under the domestic violence act.
Nov. 24 at approx. 10:14 a.m., met with the resident at a San Marco address in reference to a theft. On arrival the resident told officers that person(s) unknown had removed her daughter’s bike from her property. The bike is described as a girl’s 20-inch Mongoose and is off pink and purple in color. It has front and rear pegs and has a black case on the handlebars.
Nov. 24 at approx. 9:11 p.m., answered a call to a South Main Street address in reference to a subject who was soliciting money and would not leave. On arrival the subject was detained for purposes of identification, during the subject being detained a small amount of marijuana was seized from his person. Arrested in connection with this incident was Kenneth Bruce Edwards, Jr., 37, of a Northwood Drive address on charges of one count each of loitering and possession of marijuana less than one ounce.
Nov. 26 at approx. 1:53 p.m., answered a call to a Cook Street address in reference to an unresponsive person. On arrival the officers met with the EMS unit who were administering first aid to a male and a female subject who were found lying in bed in their home, and were unresponsive. The female was discovered to be deceased. The male, Chris Atkinson, 33, of Hazlehurst, was transported to the emergency room for further medical attention. The coroner was called to the body of Mazie Dianne McNatt, 34, of Hazlehurst. McNatt’s body was released to the coroner and later transferred to the Georgia State Crime Lab for further investigative purposes.
