In the early morning hours of November 4, Satilla REMC members in the Zoar Road community experienced a lengthy power outage resulting from the vandalism of a major piece of electrical equipment providing power service to this area. At 4:30 a.m., the Satilla control center began to receive telephone calls in regards to the outage and immediately dispatched the repair crew on call to the area. After extensive inspection of the line in question, the Satilla crew members discovered that someone had opened fire with a high-powered rifle on one of the line regulators near the Zoar Road Methodist Church. As soon as possible other Satilla technicians and Appling County law enforcement were called to the site and the repair of the line and the investigation of the damage was undertaken.

I was notified yesterday that the Appling County Sheriff Department investigators had continued the investigation beyond that morning and after much diligence had uncovered the persons responsible for the damage, and that a confession had been obtained.
The purpose of my writing this to you is threefold. First, to thank the law enforcement of Appling County for their continued efforts to assist Satilla REMC both in this incident and in the investigation and prosecution of all vandalism that we incur in Appling County, including the continuing problem of copper theft. Secondly, to thank those citizens who are willing to stand up and do what is right and lawful by helping law enforcement perform their jobs, including the investigation of problems such as this incident. Because of your efforts, restitution is expected to be paid for the damage, saving the Cooperative members several thousands of dollars in expense.
My final purpose is to assure the Members of Satilla that Satilla’s employees strive to operate and maintain our power system at a high reliability level. We’re not perfect, but generally we succeed in this endeavor. But like this incident, not all power outages can be foreseen and/or avoided. Our greatest efforts to “keep the lights on” can be made fruitless when a vandal strikes. Please help law enforcement continue to identify those persons who thoughtlessly damage and interrupt the services that your utility company provides.
