Jose Guadalupe “Papa Lupe” Nunez, 79, died Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Nunez was born in Guanajuato, Mexico on July 13, 1931. He had lived in Appling County for 32 years. Papa Lupe served 20 years of military service in Mexico. He was retired and was the owner of Nunez Pine Straw. Mr. Nunez was the son of the late Juan Nunez and the late Maria Guadalupe Vega Nunez.
Survivors include his wife, Maria Carmen Nunez of Baxley; three daughters, Maria Chavez (husband, Pedro), Maria Cook (husband, James, Sr.) and Norma Cortez (husband, Juan) all of Baxley; grandchildren: Angelina de la Mora, Isabel Carrillo, Carmen Carrillo, James Cook, Jr., Alberto Marquez, Michelle Marquez, Norma Amanda Cook, Chris Cook, Hailey Cortes and Hannah Cortes; and six great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17 in the chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with Father Rafael Estrada officiating. Interment followed in Omega Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were James Cook Sr., Pedro Chavez, Juan Cortes, Alberto Marquez, James Cook, Jr. and Adolfo Ortega.
Honorary pallbearers were Jackie Strickland, Helen Strickland, Davita Dialysis, Dr. David Paine, Dr. Colette Lewis, James (Nonnie) Carter, B. C. Cranford Jr., John Godfrey, Lewis Parker, Mickey Morris and Tommie Williams.
Musical selections were rendered by the choir of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.
Arrangements were under the direction of David E. Miles Funeral Home.
