The Altamaha Elementary project would include the demolition of the last existing wing of the original school to be replaced with an entire new wing, which would include new classrooms, a new media center, a new reception area/entrance, a new administration area and new parking, bus drop off/pickup and parent drop off/pickup area. The total estimated cost of this project is $3,737,800.00.
After reviewing a number of options, the board also voted to move forward to have plans drafted to renovate Fourth District Elementary School. The plans ranged from $1.6 million to $394,059.00. After considerable discussion the board voted to move forward and have plans drafted to demolish parts of the existing building, reroof the facility, install new flooring throughout (except cafeteria), renovate bathrooms, new doors, and other renovations. The total estimated cost of the plan is $1,074,556.00.
As reported during the meetings, the board is preliminarily projecting to have between $5.1 million to $5.7 million remaining in ESPLOST (dependent upon collections). This particular ESPLOST is set to end mid-2012.
Other business
Board members approved a change to Policy GAK. This policy relates to criminal background checks.
Under personnel, the board approved the following recommendations from Superintendent Scarlett Copeland:
-Resignation of Amber Griffis, a paraprofessional at Appling Primary.
-Resignation of Stormi Sapp, a paraprofessional at Appling Primary.
-Resignation of Arden Powell, a paraprofessional at Appling Primary.
-Hired Arden Powell as a secretary at Appling High School.
-Medical leave for Leslie Belcher, a teacher at Appling Middle School, until December 16.
-Medical leave for Cornelia Mack, a teacher at Appling Middle School, from Nov. 28 – Dec. 16.
-Maternity leave for Lucy Worthington, a teacher at Appling Primary, from March 19 – April 27.
The board approved a state waiver for State Board Rule 160-5-3-.08 that deals with school system transportation.
Board members approved one fundraiser request from Appling Middle School and two from Appling High School.
Financial reports for the months of August and September were unanimously approved.
Under information items, Policy GARH (deals with leaves and absences) and CRCT data were presented for information. Copeland did state with regard to CRCT data that principals are working on programs to improve scores in certain areas and added that the high school is now using a consultant to improve scores.
The board voted to enter into a closed-door session for personnel purposes. No action was taken following the closed session.
