Little Match Girl at Fine Arts Center November 19
The classic story of a poor girl who comes to understand the love of God through sacrifice, charity and her grandmother’s prayers is the centerpiece of An Evening of Light, scheduled at the Appling County Fine Arts Center at Appling County High School Saturday, November 19 at 7 p.m.
Laurie Jo Upchurch, the Baxley resident who is writing and directing the popular annual “Altamaha Tales” theater presentation in Lyons, wrote the script for the stage play, based on the Hans Christian Andersen short story “The Little Match Girl.”
The story is about a very poor family struggling for survival. The widowed father (Allen Miles) has been reduced to having his young daughter, Molly (Cami Crosby), sell matches on the street. The grandmother (Joy Connelley) is in such poor health she can barely protect the child; but she can pray and tell her family about love, God and heaven, where Molly’s late mother lives.
The grandmother’s lessons reach Molly and the little match girl shares love and charity with all the people she meets on the hard and cold city streets. Reaching the father is tougher work.
Sponsored by the Appling County Arts Council, An Evening of Light and “The Little Match Girl” will feature Christmas songs by the cast as well as selections from The Altamaha Elementary and 4th District Elementary Show Choirs, JoAnn Switzer, Brandi Harvey, Wanda Smith, and others.
Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Student tickets are $5. Tickets may be purchased at various locations in town and from many Arts Council and cast members. Donations of food for Appling Food Pantry are encouraged and will earn $1 off tickets purchased at the door. For more information, call the Appling County Arts Council at 278-2772.
