The Appling County Board of Commissioners held their regularly scheduled meeting at the Appling County Courthouse Annex on Tuesday, November 1 at 5:30 p.m. During the meeting County Manager Lee Lewis informed the commissioners that due to the gate valve at Lake Mayers not being opened in 19 years, and the potential for it not to close, no water has been drained.
Commission further discusses Lake Mayers
After discussion between the commissioners a motion was made by Ronnie Rentz, with a second by Charlie Leggett, to build one eight inch PVC pipe siphon to get the water draining out of the lake. The motion also stated that more pipes would be added if needed. The motion was approved by a split vote with commissioners Rentz, Leggett, Sarah Boatright and Theodore Wilkerson voting in favor and commissioner Jasper Tomberlin voting against the motion. Tomberlin cited that he had his own opinions about draining the lake.
Other business
The electrical work to replace the lamp posts on the parking lot addition located at the old Dr. Bedingfield building was not approved at the previous meeting and would need to be done before paving starts. A motion was made to approve the electrical work at the cost of $3,800.00 by Sarah Boatright, with a second by Leggett. The motion was approved unanimously.
During public input, Braeden Cochran presented a great presentation about Georgia 4-H.
Discussion was held on the upcoming holiday schedule and Christmas bonus with a decision to be made at a future meeting.
Tommy Davis gave an update on the Zoar Road Bridge with the work being completed quickly.
The commissioners held a brief executive session to discuss personnel. No action being taken.
