Appling County School System takes much pride in the educational opportunities provided for our children. Historically, Appling County students perform well when compared to other students across the state. The school system boasts a proud tradition of academic excellence where students, teachers, and administrators exhibit a long history of striving for high academic standards. Teachers and staff members work very hard to meet the needs of all students. Students are learning and making good progress, which are important indicators of success. Several assessments of student achievement have shown that our students are making significant gains, often more than a year’s growth in a year’s time.
Appling County Primary School, Appling County Elementary School, Altamaha Elementary School, and Fourth District Elementary School met Adequate Yearly Progress for 2011. Additionally, Appling County Primary School, Appling County Elementary School, Altamaha Elementary School, and Fourth District Elementary School are 2011 Title I Distinguished Schools. In spite of the progress made by the students, Appling County High School and Appling County Middle School did not meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for 2011. Appling County Middle School is identified as “adequate, did not meet” since this is the first year it has not met AYP status. Under ESEA, public schools and districts that do not meet AYP in the first year face no consequences. However, Appling County Middle School has reviewed its school plan for improvements. Appling County High School is identified as a “needs improvement year one” (NI 1) school under ESEA, since this is the second consecutive year that it has not met AYP status. As a result, the school has developed and is currently implementing plans that will focus on the academic achievement of all students, and in accordance with ESEA, specifically addressing the reason why the school is identified as NI1.
A critical component of school and student success is parent participation and support in developing activities to improve student achievement. Parents can help our schools in strengthening the academic achievement of all children. The following is a list of things parents can do to support our schools as we strive to improve the educational performance of all our students:
* Hold high expectations for your child.
* Support the school in its efforts to maintain proper discipline.
* Instill in your child a positive attitude toward school.
* Make sure that your child attends school regularly, arrives on time and has appropriate supplies.
* Communicate regularly with the teachers of your child.
In Appling County we are committed to continually seeking to improve instruction for our students. We hope that as a parent, you will become involved in our school improvement initiatives as we continue to monitor student achievement and set high expectations. We encourage you to get to know your child’s teacher, the class routines, and expectations. We are proud of the professional credentials of our teaching staff. The professional qualifications of any of your student’s classroom teachers are available upon request.
