Four-wheeler accident results in fatality
According to Appling County Sheriff Benny Deloach, on October 2 deputies responded to a call at 2209 Buck Williams Road in reference to a four-wheeler accident. Joe Bereta, age 68, of Baxley, was found deceased as a result of a four-wheeler over turning on him. The preliminary ruling by Appling County Assistant Coroner Watson ruled this incident as an accidental death.
Also on September 26, deputies answered a call to West River road in reference to shots fired. Upon arrival, officers discovered Steven Fletcher lying in a recliner chair with a single gun shot wound to the right side of his abdomen. Fletcher was transported to Appling Healthcare where he was later flown to Memorial Hospital in Savannah by Lifestar. A 22-caliber rifle was found lying on the floor next to Fletcher.
Other incidents
On September 22, a routine traffic stop on Ga. 4 resulted in the arrest of Stephanie Clayton, age 40, of Baxley. Clayton was charged with driving while unlicensed, no seatbelt, and drug related object.
Sept. 23, answered a call to Robinson Street in reference to dangerous dog. A complainant stated her neighbor’s dog killed her cat and also stated she feared for her children getting to the school bus. The neighbor was not at home at the time of the report. The complainant was advised of her rights to protect her, her family and property.
Sept. 23, answered a call to Phillipi Church Road in reference to a theft. A complainant stated his 1983 Honda motorcycle was stolen. The motorcycle was later located in Jeff Davis County along with the subjects who took the motorcycle. The complainant stated he was not going to press charges.
Sept. 23, answered a call to Gardner Road in reference to a theft. The complainant stated an unknown person broke into his storage building and stole several items valued at $1,000.00.
Sept. 23, answered a call to Gail Street in reference to damage to property. The complainant stated an unknown person pulled his telephone wires out of the box on the pole.
Sept. 23, answered a call to Hatch Parkway in reference to cruelty to animals. The complainant stated his neighbor shot his dog with a pellet gun.
Sept. 23, answered a call to Joe’s Quick Stop in reference to a domestic. Complainants stated subjects began to argue and fight them while in their vehicle. The offenders had left the scene before officer arrived.
Sept. 24, answered a call to Morris Landing in reference to an affray. A complainant stated several subjects came to his residence and started a fight. All of the subjects had left before officers arrived.
Sept. 24, answered a call to Graham-Zoar Road in reference to an unresponsive subject. The complainant stated after waking up he found Rebecca Floyd unresponsive. Appling EMS was notified and then the coroner was notified.
Sept. 24, answered a call to Mizph Baptist Church in reference to a burglary. Unknown persons entered the church and took dishes from the cabinets, took tables and put in the hallway, and took meat from the freezer and put in the social hall. Investigation continues.
Sept. 24, a complainant came to sheriff’s office to report a domestic on Dunham Lane. The complainant stated her boyfriend had thrown her to the ground and hit her several times. Complainant was advised to see the magistrate judge if she wanted to secure a warrant and press charges.
Sept. 24, answered a call to County Farm Road in reference to damage to property. The complainant stated that an unknown vehicle left the roadway and hit a hand built wooden John Deere Tractor destroying it.
Sept. 24, answered a call to Blackshear Hwy. in reference to damage to property. The complainant stated an unknown person had attempted to take the GPS system off of his 2007 John Deere tractor.
Sept. 24, answered a call to Carter Cemetery Road in reference to a domestic. A boyfriend and girlfriend got into an altercation. The boyfriend had left the scene before officer arrived.
Sept. 24, answered a call on Middlewood Drive in reference to a theft by taking. Taken was a $1000.00 in cash. Investigation continues.
Sept. 24, answered a call to Orvin Road in reference to damage to property. The complainant stated someone turned his flowerpots over causing all the dirt to pour out.
Sept. 25, answered a call to Brandon Street in reference to a child custody issue. A juvenile went to live with her father. The mother would not give the juvenile any clothes. The complainant was advised to speak with attorney.
Sept. 26, answered a call to Hatch Parkway South in reference to a theft. Maintenance was done on air compressor at Altamaha Technical and several days later the compressor was discovered missing. Investigation continues.
Sept. 26, answered a call to Mill Pond Road in reference to a financial fraud. A complainant stated a subject stole a checking account number and transferred the number to his own check. The check cleared through the complainant’s account. Investigation continues.
Sept. 26, answered a call to Appling HealthCare in reference to an intoxicated subject. Jerry Evans, age 60, of Baxley was arrested and charged with PUI.
Sept. 26, answered a call to Harmony Church Road in reference to harassment. An ex-boyfriend continues to ride his vehicle in front of complainant’s residence. The ex-boyfriend was contacted and asked to stop.
Sept. 25, answered a call to Brenda Kay Yawn Road in reference to a domestic. A mother stated her son became upset and tried to fight her husband. The son had left the residence before the officer arrived.
Sept. 26, answered a call to Hutchinson Road in reference to a theft. The complainant stated while he was asleep in his vehicle someone had stolen $31.00 in US currency.
Sept. 27, answered a call to Orvin Road in reference to a theft. The complainant stated an unknown person had stolen a Lincoln Welder and welder trailer. Investigation revealed Jared Taft Orvin had taken the welder. Orvin, age 22, of Baxley, was arrested for a probation violation and a warrant was taken for theft by taking. The welder was returned to owner.
Sept. 27, a complainant came to sheriff’s office to report a theft that occurred on Poor Robin Road in Surrency. Stolen from complainant’s shelter was a 1999 Kawasaki four-wheeler. The four-wheeler was entered into GCIC as stolen. Investigation continues.
Sept. 27, answered a call to Zoar Bridge near Graham Zoar Road. A County Shop employee stated an unknown person had stolen eight bridge closed signs and two other road signs.
Sept. 28, answered a call to Tangelwood Drive in reference to a domestic. Brian Kersey, age 36, of Baxley, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.
Sept. 28, answered a call on Chad Claxton Street in reference to threats. A complainant stated that several subjects threatened her. The complainant was advised to see magistrate in reference to warrants.
Sept. 28, answered a call on Oscar Walker Road in reference to a death investigation. Appling EMS was called and Mrs. Dorothy Carter was later pronounced deceased.
Sept. 29, answered a call on Quincy Lane in reference to a burglary. A complainant saw a male subject run out of the house. The complainant found his wallet was missing containing several cards and cash along with some clothes and jewelry. Further investigation led to the arrest of Kevin Baxley, age 28, of Baxley. Baxley was charged with burglary.
Sept. 29, answered a call to Altman Road in reference to an assault. The complainant stated an unknown subject came to her residence and asked to use her phone, then pushed the door open and hit her in the face and ribs. The complainant pushed the offender off of the porch and he ran into the woods. Investigation continues.
Sept. 30, answered a call to Whipporwill Lane in reference to loose livestock. The complainant stated her neighbor’s livestock damages her flowers. The owner of the livestock was warned to keep livestock fenced.
Sept. 30, answered a call on Mae Lane in reference to harassing texts. The complainant stated that the offender told her that he was going to send her a visitor via text message.
Sept. 30, answered a call on Bryant Boyette Road in reference to theft by deception. The complainant stated that she was buying a phone case online from a company called Circuits and Things. Complainant mailed the company a check to pay for the phone case. Complainant received an email stating that the company was not real. Be careful of who you purchase items from on the Internet. All websites are not legitimate.
