B. J. and I love to travel—and eat. However, in recent months, as per instructions from our Dr. and Weight Watcher Mentor Cathy Daniels, we have reduced the portions—well, a little.
We have covered a sizable section of the world and eaten at a goodly number of places. We have dined at beaneries where you can go barefooted and shirtless and throw your trash on the floor. In contrast, we have partaken at glamorous bistros where some schooling in the finer points of proper etiquette is helpful and a tuxedo and a formal evening gown are required dress.
Some of these eateries made such an impression on us that they are forever stored in our taste bud database. I will categorize few of these:
1. We love hamburgers. We have checked out boocoodles of hamburger joints in countless nooks on the planet. We have found some burgers quite tasteless while others are extremely succulent. The outback burger at the Outback Restaurant is hard to beat, as is the Big Mac. The Canyon Burger, though, at the Bright Angel Lodge on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon has the edge; it is indeed a unique burger. 2. Seafood is a favorite of ours. Again, like choosing the best hamburger, selecting the best seafood café is tough, especially since we live in the seafood capitol of the world, St. Simons Island, Ga. Nonetheless, there are a few spots off the island that rank high. Among these seafood refectories are Bubba Gump’s Shrimp Company at Ocean Walk in Daytona Beach, Flannigan’s Fish Camp in Ft. Lauderdale, Fisherman’s Wharf in Pompano Beach, and the Sunday Brunch at the Jekyll Island Club. If you are really up to a seafood bust (warning: do not do this if you are not one hundred percent hungry), the choice spots for a bountiful buffet are B & J’s in Darien, Ga. and the Okefenokee Restaurant in Folkston, Ga. 3. Steak: The Steak and Ale just off the Atlanta Bypass serves up a savory New York Strip that is out of this world. Closer to home, the Country Cabin near Douglas and the Reedy Creek Steakhouse close to Jesup, Ga. are front-runners. 4. For just plain good down-home cooking, Ole Times Country Buffet in Brunswick, Ga., Jones Kitchen in Jesup, Ga., The Dillard House in Dillard, Ga., and the Apple Dumpling in Baxley, Ga. are difficult to outdo.
Breakfast is a preference of ours. One of the most distinctive breakfast diners in America chosen as one of the top seven breakfast restaurants in the South by Southern Living Magazine in 2005 is Mrs. Rowe’s in Staunton, Virginia. B. J. and I dropped in and believe me it lived up to it reputation.
Nevertheless, moving back to St. Simons, perhaps the greatest All-around eating-place is a spot with the unusual name the 4th of May Deli. Deliciously prepared by expert chefs, the 4th of May Deli has something for everybody.
The breakfasts at 4th of May are fundelicious. I like the whopping big homemade biscuits topped with tasty sausage gravy along with a buttermilk pancake and a side order of country ham. B. J. prefers a made-to-order omelet with a biscuit and a side order of country ham.
The lunch and dinner menu at 4th of May offers a wide variety of tantalizing fare. One can almost become frantic trying to decide what to eat. There is an amazing list of starters and appetizers. I like it all but I specially savor the crab cakes, fried oysters and the she crab soup. B. J. goes for the grilled shrimp and chicken fingers.
For the seafood lover, the shrimp platter and the fried oyster platter is the best.
In the cold sandwich department, 4th of May’s chicken salad sandwich with white meat mixed with Hellmann’s Mayo, celery and white onion is so yummy.
The 4th of May’s version of the All-American favorite, the BLT is a favorite choice for sandwich lovers. Scrumptious Boar’s Head bacon piled on toasted white bread with lettuce, tomato, and Mayo will run you crazy.
Come on guys; take that girl out to dinner. Hey, girls insist on those guys taking you out for a great meal.
If none of the above works, get to some great home cooking.
