The Appling County Pirates hosted the Brantley County Herons on Friday, September 16 in the Region 2AA opener for both teams. The Pirates were able to overcome a slow start and pick up the win 26-13. With the win the Pirates improve to 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in region play. The Pirates will be off this week and will resume play as they travel to Toombs County (0-4, 0-1) on Friday, September 30. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
Scoring Recap
-The Pirates first scoring drive would start at the Heron 46-yard line and end with a 22-yard field goal by Israel Jaramillo to make the score 3-0.
-The Herons would start their first scoring drive at the Pirate 31 due to a Pirate fumble. The Herons would later score on a one-yard touchdown run to make the score, with the extra point, 3-7.
-Early in the second quarter the Pirates would take back the lead on a drive that started at their own 37 and end on a 31-yard touchdown run by Donnell McMillan. Jaramillo would add the extra point to make the score 10-7.
-The Pirates would recover a Heron fumble at the Heron 42 and later score on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Lashune Moore to Byron Buxton to make the score, with the extra point, 17-7.
-The next score would come for the Pirates as they started the drive at their own 19. After moving the ball quickly down the field the Pirates would score on a 13-yard pass from Moore to Buxton. The extra point attempt would be no good making the score at the half 23-7.
-The next score would not come until the fourth quarter with the Herons getting good field position after intercepting a Pirate pass at the Pirate 49.
-The Herons would later score but would not be able to convert on the two point attempt making the score 23-13.
McMillan would return the ensuing kickoff to the Heron four-yard line and would later score on a 20-yard field goal by Jaramillo making the final score 26-13.
