Commissioner Charlie Leggett asked how low the lake would need to be lowered with the answer being two to three feet, which would not impact fishing. A public hearing will be held on Tuesday, September 27 beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Commissioners Meeting Room located at the Appling County Courthouse Annex for the public to voice their concerns over the lowering of the water level at Lake Mayers. A decision is expected to be made during the meeting.
Other business
The 2012 budget was presented with one change. County Manager Lee Lewis recommended taking $100,000.00 out of the Baxley/Appling County Development Authority budget and put the money into reserves. It was explained that this money has been reimbursed to the authority the past few years to help offset running water to an industrial park. This project is now complete. A motion was made by Commissioner Jasper Tomberlin, with a second from Commissioner Ronnie Rentz, to approve the budget with the change. The motion was approved unanimously.
The following millage rates were presented: County 12.95 mills; School 15.00 mills; Fire 0.47 mills; and State 0.25 mills for a total of 28.67 mills. A motion was made by Tomberlin, with a second from Commissioner Sarah Boatright, to approve the rates. The motion was approved by all commissioners.
Sealed bids were opened for the Zoar Road Bridge replacements with bids being received from Underground Excavating for $709,562.00, Rogers Bridge Company for $774,644.24, Batir Bridge Company for $643,262.00, Southern Concrete for $698,650.00 and Gregory Bridge Company for $689,792.00. A decision was tabled until the next meeting in order to evaluate the bids closely.
Commissioners Tomberlin and Leggett were nominated to be on the Animal Control Board. A motion was made by Boatright with a second from Commissioner Theodore Wilkerson to approve the nominations. The motion was approved unanimously.
