Susie Jemima Butler, 89, died Monday, January 31, 2011 in Appling Healthcare System. Susie was a native and lifelong resident of Appling County and was born Sept. 6, 1921 to the late John Perry Beck and the late Laura Bell Bacon Beck. She was a member of Bethel Freewill Baptist Church. Mrs. Butler was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett Joel Butler, Sr., a son, James Butler and three brothers, J. P., Gene and Ozzie Beck.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Maggie and Bobby Moore of Palatka, Fla.; one daughter-in-law, Anelda Butler of Hazlehurst; four sons and daughters-in-law, John and Madeline Butler of Baxley, Joel and Pat Butler of Jacksonville, Fla.; Julian and Darlene Butler and Urell and Judy Butler, all of Baxley; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Lois and James Patterson of Jacksonville, Fla. and Beth and Guy Gay of Callahan, Fla.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Emory and Ruth Beck of Keystone, Fla., Sidney and Sylvia Beck of Callahan, Fla. and Milton Beck of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Donnette Beck of Jacksonville, Fla.; twenty grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 3 at Bethel Freewill Baptist Church with the Revs. Steve Dowless and Jerry Rogers officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Stevie Tomberlin, Steve Beck, Chuck Alexander, Cody Alexander, Greg Beck and Stanley Beck.
Honorary pallbearers were special caregiver and friend, Amanda Downing and all friends and church members.
Musical selections were rendered by Edna Vaughn, Suzanne Herrington and Julie Osborne.
Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
