Hazel Alderman Williams
Hazel Alderman Williams, died Friday, January 28, 2011. Hazel was affectionately known as “Grandma” and was born Feb. 15, 1924 in Surrency, and was one of 12 children born to the union of the late Robert and Vinia Neville-Alderman.
Hazel’s Christian experience began at an early age. Upon accepting Christ in her life, she was baptized at Second Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Surrency where she held various positions in the church. She was also a member of the Interdenominational Choir until her health failed.
Hazel attended Surrency Elementary School and graduated from Risley High School in Brunswick. She later retired from the Appling County Board of Education School Food Service Program at the Appling County Elementary Complex.
Three sisters, four brothers and one grandson, Vernon Alderman preceded her in death.
Survivors include one daughter, Wilmatine (Gerald) Nales of Decatur; one son, Henry (Mary Nell) Alderman of Baxley; four grandsons, Gerald Jr. (Robin) Nales, Andre’ Nales, Henry Alderman, Jr., Kenneth (Courtney) Alderman; one granddaughter, Pamela (Reginald E.) Landers, Jr. of Ocala, Fla.; six great-grandchildren, Jateris Nales, Jabrie Nales, Andrea Ringfield, Janell Avery, Kenneth Alderman, Jr., and Kaden Alderman; one brother, Charles (Bernice) Alderman; three sisters, Vera George, Gussie (Jethar) Burkett and a special devoted sister, Minnie A. Barnes; one sister-in-law, Lena Alderman; one brother-in-law, George Ruffin. Children reared in the home were: Cathy Moss, Curtis (Cynthia) Jordan, Richard Hairston, Yvette Hairston, Reginald (Sherryl) Hairston and Vanessa (William) Smith whom she raised as her own.
She also leaves to cherish special nephew, Jesse (Jacqueline) Alderman; also very special to her were Terry (Desirine) Williams, Brittany Smith, and Rose (Carlos) Rooks; two care givers, Bettye W. Miller and Valesa Frazier; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4 at First African Missionary Baptist Church with Minister James Hayes officiating. Pastor, the Rev. Johnny M. Blair, gave eulogy. Interment followed in Surrency Grove Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were nephews.
Honorary pallbearers were Best Care, Inc., Dr. Cezar and staff, Appling Healthcare System and Scott’s Adult Daycare Center.
Musical selections were rendered by soloist, Gwendolyn Ryals, instrumental solo by Henry Alderman, Sr. and the choir.
Arrangements were under the direction of Baxley Funeral Home.
