Nobles Funeral Home and Crematory announces the funeral services for Robert Donald Lane -GySgt., USMC, (Retired), age 92, who passed away Thursday, February 21, 2019, at his residence under the care of Comfort Care Hospice.
He was a resident of Appling County for the past 30 years previously living in Savannah. Mr. Lane served in the United States Navy from 1943-1946 during WWII being deployed on the Destroyer USS Hudson stationed in the South Pacific as a GM3C Gunnery Mate third Class. Mr. Lane joined the USMC July 21, 1947 and served as the Sgt. squad leader for the Dog Company, Second Battalion, and Seventh Marines in the Korean War. His leadership was instrumental during the Chinese attacks on Yudam-ni the night and morning of November 27-28, 1950 in which his company held off a Chinese invasion with hand to hand combat. Of the forty Marines in Dog Company he was only one of 16 that survived. Mr. Lane retired from the USMC in 1964.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald William and Dorothy Morlock Lane.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Lane of Baxley; five children, Leslie Lane (Cathy) of Bulloch County, Laura Darnall (DeWain) of Savannah, Harriet O’Rourke (Jay) of Savannah, Jo Morse (Robert) of Richmond Hill and Karen May (Jimmy) of Savannah; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 23, 2019, at 3:00 p.m. at Midway Baptist Church with the Reverend Wayne Williamson and Reverend Benji McReady officiating.
Interment followed in the church cemetery with military honors.
Visitation was held one hour prior to services at the church.
Honorary Pallbearers were the Adult Sunday School Class of Midway Baptist Church.
